Jesus fucking Christ.

All she had to say was that she didn't like it. I'll grant her that it doesn't really have a plot per se, but it wasn't an empty spectacle either. It's a meditation on war and survival.

What I really hate about this review is that it comes across like she went into it expecting to hate it, but is writing the review from a POV that expects the reader to believe the opposite. It's not like Harry Styles being cast was a secret. If you knew that was gonna throw you out of the film, you almost certainly knew he was in it to begin with. His involvement was pretty heavily publicized.

Not only does it come across that she went into the movie drooling at the mouth expecting to hate it, it comes across that she's mad at it for not being what she wanted it to be. The only problem with that is that she absolutely, 100% knew beforehand that it was not going to be what she wanted it to be. "Why isn't it a movie about women in WWII?" Because it isn't. Those do exist. There's the film Their Finest which was really good. There's the Canadian television series Bomb Girls which is also really good. She's literally mad at Dunkirk for not filling a void that, while small in what it has to offer, isn't actually a void at all.

It's so irritating.

I mean yes, there aren't as many movies about women who fought during the war but ... There so ply weren't as many women as men dying during that war. Not anywhere close.
