I rememeber what I wanted to show here!

[personal profile] thewakokid 2017-07-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This article:

http://www.marieclaire.com/celebrity/news/a28515/dunkirk-movie-review/

Now my gut reading of this is "Aren't men and masculinity so very bad!"

But I agree I might be being baised an possibly knee-jerky. Thoughts anyone?

That is a very angry reviewer. The whole article was dumb, imo. It wasn't really a review of the movie, but an excuse for the author to rant. And the Harry Styles part was extra dumb. Pop stars can't be in movies because it breaks the fourth wall and renders the fantasy obsolete! Dumb.

But I did like this bit: "If this movie were a dating profile pic, it would be a swole guy at the gym who also goes to Harvard."

Made me chuckle.

I know! Especially when it's Nolan. Guy does stunt casting all the time.

What I cant tel is if she's ranting at the movie because she didn't like it, or if she's ranting at the movie because men did like it? Like it seems to me that her biggest problem is that "MEN!!!!!"

I think it's just a bad article, with no deeper significance.

Well, agreed there, but I wonder if me being irritated by what the article is saying is... well am I reading this bad insignificant article correctly?

No, it's just a dumb article. Sometimes people just say things that don't make any sense.

I just saw this today and was massively disappointed by the complete and total lack of a plot. And still I think that review is stupid. Subjective bits aside, the author calls it the battle of Dunkirk! No surprise she wasn't disappointed that we never saw the HQ in the cliffs of Dover or the military and civilian perspectives in the week leading up to the evacuation or even the civilian craft landing on the beach.

I really did hate this film but I also loved it for unapologetically being exactly what it wanted to be. It wasn't the film I was looking for, but it never needed to be. It's a great spin on an often tired genre and it was crafted to immerse the audience in the events. It massively succeeded and the entire cast, including that 1D kid who I didn't even recognise until the end, did a brilliant job.

Oh, and I meant to say I don't think you're being knee-jerky. I'm a forty year old woman and I have much the same response to her article.

Assuming this is a genuine question (I've had trouble processing sarcasm over the internet the past few days) Harry Styles is a pop star who's now broken out on his own for a solo career after having been one of the five members of the boy band One Direction.

it is a sincere question. I wouldn't be able to tell you the name of anyone in One Direction, I am not a fan of that kind of music. the sort of "boy bands" I listen to are the Beatles or the Kinks. :)

I definitely know his name, but don't know his face, so all that complaining about how he will inevitably pull absolutely everyone out of the movie made me shake my head.

(The only reason I know what Ed Sheeran looks like is because of Bridget Jones' Baby, where I was just as clueless as Bridget and her friend.)

I think Renee Zellweger (sp?) is a good actress in the movies I've seen her in but I never saw any of the Bridget Jones movies. (and she's making one of the stupidest faces I've ever seen in the poster for the second one, which makes me glad I've never seen them.)

That is a bad article and she should feel bad for writing it. Boo-hoo, this movie didn't cater to my tastes and those horrible horrible men like it, therefore I shall excoriate Nolan for not making a movie about "marginalized people" in WWII.

And good GOD, the Harry Styles thing is just dumb. By that dubious logic, any famous face in a movie breaks the "it's not real" wall. Also, and I'm sorry I'm old, but I wouldn't know Harry Styles if he bumped into me on the street.

Basically, her article is all ME ME ME and says more about her than it does the movie. (Which I haven't seen and have no intention of seeing.)

Jesus fucking Christ.

All she had to say was that she didn't like it. I'll grant her that it doesn't really have a plot per se, but it wasn't an empty spectacle either. It's a meditation on war and survival.

What I really hate about this review is that it comes across like she went into it expecting to hate it, but is writing the review from a POV that expects the reader to believe the opposite. It's not like Harry Styles being cast was a secret. If you knew that was gonna throw you out of the film, you almost certainly knew he was in it to begin with. His involvement was pretty heavily publicized.

Not only does it come across that she went into the movie drooling at the mouth expecting to hate it, it comes across that she's mad at it for not being what she wanted it to be. The only problem with that is that she absolutely, 100% knew beforehand that it was not going to be what she wanted it to be. "Why isn't it a movie about women in WWII?" Because it isn't. Those do exist. There's the film Their Finest which was really good. There's the Canadian television series Bomb Girls which is also really good. She's literally mad at Dunkirk for not filling a void that, while small in what it has to offer, isn't actually a void at all.

It's so irritating.

I mean yes, there aren't as many movies about women who fought during the war but ... There so ply weren't as many women as men dying during that war. Not anywhere close.

I really don't understand when people say 'it doesn't have a plot'. It's using film as the visual medium it is to tell the story of 1) the small group of soldiers who are stuck on the beach, 2) the pilot of the small boat and his crew, and 3) the RAF pilot. And the movie tells those stories beautifully. No film can capture all of any part of any war, but there are three full stories to follow.
But then again, I loved Mad Max: Fury Road and people say it doesn't have a plot. I think Nolan and Miller were both telling a story through visuals and assuming that their viewer could follow along.

I think it's also an element of most women died driving ambulances, nursing, as civilian casualties. It's just tragic, there's no cinematic-friendly 'guts and glory!' element .
Would love to see the stories of some of the female British and French spies and resistance fighters though.

Oh and the leader of the anti-Nazi student movement in Germany, the White Rose I think they were called. She was brave as hell. Died with defiance on her lips.

Here's a different review you might like better.
