[Steve Whitmire, former voice and puppeteer for Kermit the Frog]

Nothing I've heard about him makes me even slightly sympathetic to him

The interviews I've seen with him make him sound awfully... I don't know, proprietary about Kermit? I guess I can understand that after being his puppeteer and voice for so long, but in the end you have to realize that it's not your creation and nobody has to take your feedback on characterization as a mandate.

Sadly, the only person who has the definite authority to say what is or is not in character for Kermit has been dead since 1990. That said, Steve is Jim’s hand-picked successor and has been playing Kermit for almost three decades. I think it’s safe to say that yes, he understands the character better than the Muppets’ Disney overlords do. Steve, Frank, and Dave worked side-by-side with Jim and know what he would and would not want better than a thirty year old sitcom writer does.

Steve’s opinion should have been given weight, and if it wasn’t, that’s a travesty. However, he is also not the final Muppet authority. His voice can’t be the only one, and if he refused to accept that, that’s on him. For what it’s worth, there was a lot wrong with The Muppets, but I didn’t think Kermit’s characterization was necessarily one of them. Still, I think letting him go was a huge mistake. Surely a compromise could have been found.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that Matt is going to be a wonderful Kermit. But Steve’s loss is a major blow to the Muppets.

what aspect of Kermit's character exactly was this about?

The first half season of The Muppets (assuming we're talking about the short lived tv show here.) Kermit, and a lot of the other characters were just mean. It was especially evident with Kermit because Kermit is...well...Kermit. He never has a bad thing to say about anybody. He'd just indulge with long suffering sighs and a joke at the camera.

I can't think of any examples because I only watched each episode once on first run.

Having said that, the second half of the season was much improved and I even got choked up at times. The Gonzo episode especially, but also the friendship between Piggy and Deadly was a high mark.

Deadly was hands-down the best thing about that show, and I would have put up with worse characterizations of the rest of the Muppets just to get more of him. I also loved what they did with Sam Eagle. He got his original characterization back instead of the ultra-patriotic caricature he's been for years.

The back half of the show was such a vast improvement over the first half that I felt really bad when it was canceled. I think people tuned in for the first few episodes, hated what they were doing with the characters, and didn't give it a second chance.

What do you know? It's almost like Steve is right.

Also, Piggy's hair was on point like whoa.

Jim Henson's adult children all agree that Whitmire's firing was past due and have expressed the opinion that his take on Kermit's characterization wasn't correct, though. One of Whitmire's primary objections was that he didn't think Kermit would be dishonest, even to the point of telling a white lie. That simply doesn't match with Kermit's characterization in the original Muppet Show.
