131. I'm looking to maybe write a lesbian in a het relationship. Really, it's the same thing as turning straight guys gay, so what's the problem? Slash and Femslash is about creating an interesting dynamic between characters, not "Oh, let's make 'em ghey".

148. I saw the trailer and found it horrendously sexist, so I'm with you there.

160. I think tons of people agree with you there, sweetheart.

163. I bet the latest xkcd strip made you happy. :D

Slash and Femslash is about creating an interesting dynamic between characters, not "Oh, let's make 'em ghey".

...for me, making the characters gay is exactly what slash/femslash is about. (I don't read het.) Not to say that's the only reason, but don't assume everyone thinks the way you do.

My apologies.

Can I ask, then, if you simply enjoy reading gay sex more than het? Or is there another reason I'm not seeing?

Re: 131

[identity profile] puritybrown.livejournal.com 2008-06-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much. Plus, I'm gay myself, so gay relationships are just inherently more interesting to me. Ever since I figured out my own sexuality, I started looking for gay relationships in media. There aren't that many, and a lot of them are unsatisfactory in some way -- they're stereotypical, or they're sidelined, or they're in some genre that turns me off, or something. Enter fanfiction, to fill the void.

It's not that I have no interest in m/f relationships; it's just that I feel like they're adequately catered for in mainstream media, you know? There's a het romance in damned near every movie, TV series, book and comic book. Gay romance -- not so much.

I can totally see that. :slow nods: I stopped watching mainstream television for reasons like that about a year ago (lack of gay characters, sexism, and a lot of horrible writing overall). It's so different in fandom, where all sorts of relationships are catered to, I think I forgot just how aggravating media in general is.

I think the problem that a lot of people have is that in various parts of the world (especially in parts of the United States), being gay is viewed as a simple illness that can be 'cured'.

That's why when many readers see that an author has turned a gay character straight they think 'homophobe'.

Re: 131

[identity profile] lucia-tanaka.livejournal.com 2008-06-07 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That... is incredibly discouraging to me. I've written slash for about four or five years now, but I have this one pairing I wanna do with a lesbian and a straight guy because I love their friendship, their banter, and I think their personalities will clash in such a way to make the relationship hilarious.

Sometimes it's not about "curing" anything. Which, I gotta say, the very notion of is idiotic and, yeah, I know folks who think of it that way. It's disturbing.

I totally agree with your comments; I go for relationships and chemistry, not gender. :|

I'm curious about your fic now. :3 Fandom/characters?
