All of these commenters on here trying to excuse the fact away that they are, in fact, racist. No one has come up with a single good reason why the main character must be white (and 'the character identifies as being white' still doesn't explain it well enough for me). I haven't read the book (despite being a King fan), but even if King explained every physical quality of the character, down to his shoe size, and they picked an actor who bore every single one of those physical qualities, he would still not be how everyone pictured in their heads!
Idris is a talented, charismatic actor, so what's the problem?
Would you prefer they cast someone like, say, Adam Sandler? After all, he's white.

Oh, come off it. I love Idris, I haven't read the books, I'm all for racebending if the character could potentially be anything... BUT when the books and graphic novels and all canon material blatantly scream "Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider," and his race does play a role in certain character arcs, could you really not see WHY the fan base would find Stacker Pentacost a jarring and counterintuitive choice? Even though he's an awesome actor, he's not what was set up in their minds for the last twenty years.

Boo-fucking-hoo. Peter Jackson fucked up half the mental images of the Lord of the Rings. Marvel's casting in the last two years has been a fucking mess. But they change a white character to a black man and you all piss yourselves like fucking whiny racists and think that excuses your shitty behavior because you read a book? Fuck off.

Yeah, yeah, not sucking every black dude's dick makes you racist, sure thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
No, but shitting your pants in a temper tantrum every time a black man is cast as someone you think should be white sure fucking does, genius.

Not agreeing with a cast is always the same as shitting your pants in a temper tantrum, sure thing.
Personally, I think too many white AND black people are cast for roles that could use a more diverse casting. But Americans usually seem to think only black people are the be all and end all to racially diverse casts.

Rolland, Nick Fury, Heimdall, Johnny Storm, Hercules... all caused massive racist tirades from fandom so... idk dude. I think they've got a point here.

Pretty sure black Nick Fury was a thing in the comics before the movies. And no, not liking a casting doesn't automatically make you racist, just like not liking a female character automatically makes you sexist. This (literally) black-and-white world you live in must get boring sometime.

Man that is a really weird way to frame it

framing it that way actually makes me start to think that you might be kind of racist

I had this same conversation with some people on a youtube video about the movie (shockingly, 95% of the people in a thread of over 130 replies were totally fine with a black man in the role and were bitching out the other 5% who were whining about the dreaded sjw agenda)

Seriously, out of everything that was changed in the adaption, why is it race that's the big no-no other than racism? Sure, people are saying it had some small relevance in one of the books, but it doesn't seem like enough to warrant this kind of hatred. Like you said, look what they changed and left out of LotR, and it's still one of the most beloved movie trilogies of all time.

Sorry guys, but if you hate this movie cause it stars a black man then you're fucking racist. Dont know what else to tell ya.
