What a brave soul with this one of a kind new opinion.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... are secrets only allowed to be new, original opinions no one's ever heard of before? Because if so, next week's secret count will probably be zero. :)

It's probably pretty racist

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Most reviews I've seen (and agree with myself, as a massive SK fan) say he's the best part of the movie so uh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ congrats on being racist-and-happy-with-it, I guess?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
My sister was pretty sad about it too. Him being white is important to huge portions of the story. Guess it is a good thing they ruined the story!

IT'S. NOT. THE. SAME. ROLAND.

(Granted, King's version of eternal warrior in cyclic time feels like an asspull out of Moorcock to justify how all versions of all of his works happen in the same universe, but still: ETERNAL. WARRIOR. IN. CYCLIC. TIME.)

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it a shittier version.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

I wouldn't mind that if they had made it clear that it was not the same Roland instead of titling the thing The Dark Tower and saying it's an adaptation of the books. If they'd gone with a Doctor Who kind of thing where he's Roland #337 and titled it something else, I'd have expected... less? More? Not gone in expecting to see the story from the book it titled itself after?

The Eternal Champion, yep.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually a better question: why hasn't anyone made any Moorcock movies

I mean, I guess the commercial prospects of a Jerry Cornelius or Elric movie might not be the greatest, but they've made movies out of crazier stuff

It's the same Roland up until he crosses the Mohaine Desert. There's no canonical excuse for him to turn black.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just been too long since I read the books; where is it important to the story that he's white...?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
In The Drawing of the Three, when he pulls O/Detta into Midworld and Detta goes on multiple racist tirades against Roland and Eddie because she's been kidnapped from her own world by a couple of honkies.

TBH, I think the movie will do fine in the Asian markets. I doubt the books are as popular in China, and as a stand-alone action movie, Dark Tower was perfectly acceptable, if you go into it with no expectations.

I don't lie, having the main role cast as someone completely different from the image I had in my head made me lose all interest in watching this.

It's not only race, to be fair. I imagined someone smaller in build too, who is scruffier in the face and and messier in dress as well, and someone younger who looks older than their years versus someone older who looks younger than their years.

But yea, I won't post this logged in because people have already started with the "racist" thing. Not white, by the way.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I said probably racist, not definitely racist

and the issue for me is that... like... all adaptations necessarily depart from their sources. there's no such thing as a truly faithful adaptation.

so picking out a change in race as the specific line that can't be crossed is, to me, usually kind of weird and needs some kind of justifying.

I don't think it's racist because you mentioned other characteristics. Honestly, that's how I pictured Roland too and I was really surprised that Elba had been cast because he didn't match my mental picture of Roland at all. I did like him in the movie, but I went in knowing full well that it was some alternate version of Roland, not the book one. Someone who didn't know that might've been confused or disappointed. Like people who went to see Crimson Peak expecting horror when it was really a gothic romance.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I won't watch The Cursed Child too. It jars so much with the books.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind Idris Elba so much- he was an awesome Heimdall, but, yeah, I had a completely different idea of what Roland looks like.

But what I won't overlook is that they did not have Susannah.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering ever since Elba was cast if they would basically use him being black to dismiss Susannah's role.

I like Susannah, but I thought they didn't have her because they haven't met her yet. I know it's not exactly like the books because it's supposed to be some kind of alternate continuation, but I figured they would introduce her in another movie because she doesn't appear until later. Same with Eddie, who's my favorite character.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
All of these commenters on here trying to excuse the fact away that they are, in fact, racist. No one has come up with a single good reason why the main character must be white (and 'the character identifies as being white' still doesn't explain it well enough for me). I haven't read the book (despite being a King fan), but even if King explained every physical quality of the character, down to his shoe size, and they picked an actor who bore every single one of those physical qualities, he would still not be how everyone pictured in their heads!
Idris is a talented, charismatic actor, so what's the problem?
Would you prefer they cast someone like, say, Adam Sandler? After all, he's white.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-09 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, come off it. I love Idris, I haven't read the books, I'm all for racebending if the character could potentially be anything... BUT when the books and graphic novels and all canon material blatantly scream "Clint Eastwood in Pale Rider," and his race does play a role in certain character arcs, could you really not see WHY the fan base would find Stacker Pentacost a jarring and counterintuitive choice? Even though he's an awesome actor, he's not what was set up in their minds for the last twenty years.

I don't care who they cast. I tried reading The Dark Tower years and years ago and couldn't get into it. So I never finished reading it or any of the other books in the series. I'm a King fan but IMHO most of his book-to-movie adaptations have sucked ass. The only two that don't fall into the suck ass category were Misery, The Green Mile, and Shawshank Redemption.

The movie's going to suck anyway and I have no intentions of watching it. So it makes no never mind to me one way or the other.
