I do like watching panels, but yeah, some of those questions make me cringe so hard.

I get secondhand embarrassment, too. I hate when fans ask actors like... sexual stuff, or just come across like total losers.

And I am a total loser who is way too curious about sexual stuff. I still can't bear to watch it.

Are you me? Soooooooooo much this.

In all the panels I've seen, I think I've only ever heard about five intelligent questions asked. Everything else is either cliche or cringe-worthy.

can relate so much. the cringe gets so real.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I feel like I'm better off not being able to attend convention panels because I think I would get annoyed and/or embarrassed by most of the questions.

HARD SAME

i can barely watch live shows bc i'm so uncomfortable with it. i think it's the uncontrolled environment of fan and creator, bc i'm fine with regular theater. but yes, i cringe so much.

I get that. I do. 'Cause too many times I have been in the audience and seen it happen.

I was at the panel for the DC universe original movies panel at SDCC, and no less than three people had to be corrected that this was about the specific DTV original movies program that started 10 years ago, so Mask of the Phantasm wasn't included. That was pretty painful for me to watch

Yeah I never watch panels for this reason, that and the questions don't tend to be that interesting. I just stick to someone giffing them and seeing it that way tbh.

I think they're often also geared towards actor fans than show fans. I watched one and I was so excited, except it was just fangirls wanting to know Nathan Filion's favorite brand of shoes. Sigh. I wanted to know about the characters on Castle; I couldn't have cared less about Nathan Filion.

I can understand this. I'm usually okay until someone thinks that X Famous Person cares about Y fan's slash fanfiction...

Same, anon. There's so many ways for it to be cringey. The most likely way is for someone in the audience to ask a really stupid or inappropriate question. Or be way too gushy about telling the actor how much they adore them before actually getting to their question. But I also cringe when one of the writers or actors is really terrible at answering questions and keeps giving really short, non-interesting answers, or goes off on long, totally unrelated tangents and seems unable to follow a thought through to the end.

Or occasionally there's just a weird dynamic between a couple of cast members or something. Or you can tell that one of the actors/writers is annoyed by a question, and usually I respect why they're annoyed, but it still kind of makes everything a little bit uncomfortable for a couple of minutes.

There's just way too much potential for it to be cringey. I prefer to wait until people makes gifs of the panel. Or sometimes I'll watch brief snippets of the panel, because I figure if someone likes that bit enough to make a snippet of it and post it to their tumblr, it probably isn't super cringey.

I get this.

I have a really hard time watching any live audience question and answer session. If the questions are sent in beforehand (so they can be vetted and edited) or if the moderator is asking questions, it's usually fine, though not always. And it's not just the embarrassing questions, or the weirdly involved ones, it's also if the fan gets overwhelmed and starts crying or something.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I can't even watch the videos people put up... i do have to admit I respect the people who answer them and are good sports about it.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Same here. I don't care to watch videos of that sort of stuff just because of the cringe factor.

I went to a Neil Gaiman event once. They had the audience write questions on cards and then he flipped through them on stage and answered the ones that he wanted, the ones he had good answers to, and presumably the ones that he hadn't answered 1000 times before. I thought that was a great way for people there to get to ask questions, without the dreaded person getting up and asking a four minute question at the mic that just rambles on or is embarrassing.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
By far, not the only one. I'd rather wait to catch if there was good moments later on than sit through an hour or so of cringing so hard my face hurts. Totally skip it if I'm there in person.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been to a con that can afford big stars, so I've seen fans get weird in panels with really small-name actors, too. It makes me cringe extra hard because often these actors seem like such normal people, so innocent, and they just happened to land this gig on a show that became popular and now people are asking them inappropriate questions.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm much more superficial and get embarrassed by awkward ugly people asking questions. I think it's a thing like, only the unattractive weird looking types are obsessive enough to follow actors to a panel show or an interview session and every single time I wish the actor is a saint and doesn't immediately think "Oh god, these guys are my fans?".

(Anonymous) 2017-08-17 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't this a repeat of a fairly recent secret? Or is second hand embarrassment on panels that pervasive?
