Dressing really poorly and having bad hygiene and overall looking gross at conventions or other fan events.

Yes, it's petty. But it's cringey to me when you go to meet someone you idolize or who portrays a character you love, and you wear ill-fitting pants, a ragged, wrinkled anime T-shirt and cat ears, and clearly none of it has been washed since you bought it because you absolutely reek of BO.

I honestly think those types of fans are severely depressed and/or have a condition that impairs their understanding social norms.

Eh. If you're well enough to save money and attend a con, you're capable of wearing clean clothes and showering, IMO.

This. There are tons of voice actors I want to meet, but I haven't gone to a con yet. I've met some of my favorite authors and comic book artists and I did my best to look neat and presentable. I dressed up a little for them because that's how much I respect them.

I don't really care how people dress at a fan convention especially because it's not a job interview, it's a social gathering, and not everyone even goes to meet celebs.

But I will agree with you about the bad hygiene if only because I've been to conventions where that makes things SMELL. Please wear deodorant people.

I sometimes wonder how much of the smell at cons is actually caused by poor hygiene. I've been to a couple and they were so crowded and hot (and in an enclosed area, at that) that I would have been more weirded out if I hadn't caught a whiff of the occasional offensive odor.

I think it's understandable when things are hot and crowded but I also think people having poor hygiene exacerbates the problem.

I mean I've played sports and been in situations where I was surrounded by sweaty people and often it's usually just takes one person not wearing deodorant to make a whole room smell.

Ugh, this so much. I have a rule for my con rooms that everyone has to take at least one shower in a 24 hour period. If you can't even manage that, you are not staying in my hotel room.

For me that's a combination of cringe and pity.

Like, I've known a lot of nerds like that who WANT to look nice and be clean, but they had simply never learned how to dress themselves appropriately or they'd never really learned proper hygiene. Their parents never taught them how to wash their hair, for example, or they never had someone to tell them "those pants don't fit right in the back". They know they look bad but they don't know what steps to take to fix it.

But it also makes me cringe because barring some pretty serious disability, there's really no excuse for hygiene that's so bad I can smell you across the room. Or dressing like a sentient pile of laundry with cat ears.

I mean, when I was homeless I dressed and bathed better than many nerds seemingly manage to. Hell, even when my depression and PTSD and anxiety were at the point where I could only handle being in public every few months and I couldn't even look at people's faces without flipping out and I was self-medicating by binge drinking and doing all the drugs all the time, I still managed that.

"Their parents never taught them how to wash their hair"

Okay but how can you not manage to figure out how to wash your hair on your own even without being taught? It's not like it's complicated, you literally just apply shampoo, scrub, then rinse. Hell, even just taking a shower with water will wash off most of the stink.
