Not like those other fans

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
What petty things do you judge other fans for doing?

Re: Not like those other fans

(Anonymous) 2017-08-15 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I judge anyone who gets involved in ship wars and/or will unfollow someone specifically for liking a ship. Shipping is just not that serious to me.

There's nothing wrong with unfollowing someone if they're going to be posting a lot of stuff about one of your NoTPs. Or if you realize they're fannish interests and your fannish interests maybe aren't that compatible. It's only dickish if you message them to let them know you're unfollowing them, or make some kind of passive aggressive comment on your tumblr about people shipping the worst pairings or something.

Guess you're going to judge me for unfollowing people who like my NOTP. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Anonymous) 2017-08-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
This. Shipping just doesn't click at all with me and the level some fans take it to is a little bit disturbing,

Eeh, judge away. I judge people who treat following/unfollowing like it was some Big Deal.

I started following a Darth Maul blog and suddenly they started also posting my NOTP too (which didn't even have anything to do with Maul? At all?) so away they went. If the food blogs I follow started posting baseball related stuff instead I'd probably unfollow them. They're not friends, they just provide content.

-collecting aesthetically unpleasing fan merch, which is most of it
-i straight up don't get cosplay, don't hate it per se, just don't get the appeal

I judge fans who show actors/musicions/artists/etcetera their erotic fanfiction and fanart. Unless that person really wants to see some erotic fanworks, they really shouldn't share it. It's creepy and awkward AF.

I'm imagining someone at a con throwing a binder of a five hundred page erotic fanfic at someone.

Agreed. There's a line between fans and celebrities you just do not cross, and that's a perfect example of it.

Oh jeeze, yeah never do this. Even if they seem to be cool with the ship just... don't.

When they claim to kin with a character, get super possessive over a character or ship and try to claim they are their #1 fan.

Dressing really poorly and having bad hygiene and overall looking gross at conventions or other fan events.

Yes, it's petty. But it's cringey to me when you go to meet someone you idolize or who portrays a character you love, and you wear ill-fitting pants, a ragged, wrinkled anime T-shirt and cat ears, and clearly none of it has been washed since you bought it because you absolutely reek of BO.

I honestly think those types of fans are severely depressed and/or have a condition that impairs their understanding social norms.

This. There are tons of voice actors I want to meet, but I haven't gone to a con yet. I've met some of my favorite authors and comic book artists and I did my best to look neat and presentable. I dressed up a little for them because that's how much I respect them.

I don't really care how people dress at a fan convention especially because it's not a job interview, it's a social gathering, and not everyone even goes to meet celebs.

But I will agree with you about the bad hygiene if only because I've been to conventions where that makes things SMELL. Please wear deodorant people.

When they start demanding that the creators should validate their political or social beliefs in canon. But, but the current plotline is problematic because it isn't exactly like I would present the issue.

Re: Not like those other fans

The people who complain about how much screentime a favorite character is or isn't getting. Sure, I'm thrilled when my favorite character gets a good storyline and screentime, too, and yes, many of my favorite episodes would focus on them. But they are not the only character on the show, and the other characters deserve attention, too.

(And even if and when I do have a particular character that's my favorite, since I'm also the sort who tends to like most, if not all, of the other characters on the shows I watch, I'm more than happy to watch storylines about those characters, too.)

Contributing nothing to the fandom except for criticism about the canon, talking about what's "problematic" in it and nothing else. You can criticize the things you like, but if that's all you ever do about it, I wonder if you even like it at all.

I know in truth it could be that they like most of it and just don't have anything interesting to say when it comes to what they like about it, but in my heart I can't buy that possibility.

Kind of related to the above thread, but I hate it when fans ask someone a really obvious FAQ type question that they could've googled because it's been asked so often,in every interview ever.

Brigading review rankings or awards. Especially if it's clear that the brigaders don't actually read/view/play the works in question.

Asking the actors (often repeatedly) to follow them on social media, or begging for someone to "notice them" and etc.

Although, I guess we're all trying to get our faves to "notice us" when we tweet them. Plain up saying "notice me" kinda cuts to the chase, but I still think it's rude and annoying, when people do it.
