A toilet plunger. You may never need one but you NEVER want to be without one when you do.

Also, that's an oral thermometer."

my critter catcher
jar opener
a heater

They're much cheaper and more reliable than having "someone to catch spiders, open jars for you, and keep you warm at night."

I mean, I realize women get into relationships with men for more reasons than this, but these are "reasons" some people share, and, well...the alternatives are a lot cheaper.

jar opener

Just for the record, with most jars you can loosen the lid by wacking it along the edge with a knife a few times.

Why would you need to catch spiders.

Nah, just don't like squishing things, so I remove them instead

Not a rarely used item where I live, but if you have a car and live in a place where it could possibly get icy on the windshield overnight, you should have a scraper. I had to scrape ice of my rental car with a library card while visiting a cousin near San Francisco.

Haha, me and a friend had to do the exact same when we were leaving work last winter. Took at least 20 minutes between us.

but... it mostly doesn't ever get icy overnight in most places near San Francisco

That's why it would be a rarely-used item! So useful when you need it, though.

A can punch - the type of can opener that cuts a triangular hole in the top of a can. Also a bottle opener when you don't drink beer. They can be on the same tool, with the bottle opener on the other end to the punch.

When one uses a normal can opener most of the time, or even most cans already have a ring-pull, having a punch can be damn usful when things don't open properly.
Same can be said about the bottle opener, especially in regards to the aforementioned non-drinking. When you run into a bottle with a bottle cap (there's a brand of asian sauces I sometimes buy that has caps), having an opener is a great thing.
