Well, you know, he was designed to be plain, so I guess I see where you're coming from.

I adore him as a character for a lot of reasons where absolutely none of them are about his looks.

I agree on his general looks, but I absolutely loved how much those changed when he was in costume and performing on ice.

Yeah for real. I personally thought it was cool as fuck how Yuri could look like such a dweeb, especially at the beginning off the series, and completely transform on the ice. It made especially his Eros dance so cool, and makes him feel like any incredible performance artist.

Same. I just couldn't get into the series because of his character.

I hate his glasses, but he gets super hot when he's not wearing them, especially after he loses weight. I love how he looks when he's performing.

lmao I completely agree. I always cringed at "eros" Yuuri because it was supposed to be sexy but he still looked generic af.

I mostly cringed because the animation turned into a three frame slideshow every time he performed eros.

Also I never understood the appeal of Victor either. He looks like a balding cyclops.

I think he's adorable, but one of my friends doesn't want to watch YOI for the same reason.

I'm one of those people who has a MASSIVE uncanny valley reaction to the big eye no nose little mouth face 99% of anime characters seem to have.

I had the same thought when I started watching it, but it's not a harem anime and he actually has a personality, so I stopped noticing the resemblance pretty fast.

I feel like the only one who doesn't really like "sexy" Yuuri. Chubby Yuuri is best Yuuri.

He looks less generic in Kubo´s style. I wish the anime design was like that. I get that his looks are a result of his lack of confidence, but he still could be normal looking with something that makes him stand out a little bit. Like Leo, he´s normal (in comparison with like Yurio), but there´s something unique about him. I like the anime a lot, but yeah, I just don´t feel Yuri´s design.

The fandom is what killed any spark of interest I may have had for this anime. But the generic character designs don't help its case either.

I'm confused. It's not a harem anime at all. You just don't like that he looks like a dork? I mean, considering anime tends to default to hot protagonists, it's kind of interesting that Yuri is dull looking, at least most of the time, and it serves as a nice contrast to how he looks when he's performing (or later on in the series when he is in top shape and acting more seriously). I loved Yuri's design, I thought it was the best in the show.

It's not "he looks like every other ecchi harem anime protagonist", it's that there's a specific look that ecchi harem anime protagonists have, and Yuuri's design has a lot in common with it. Straight dark hair with bangs over the face, glasses, dark eyes, dorky-looking, every major character has actual unique features except for the protagonist... in the ecchi harem anime it's to make it easier for the viewer to self-insert as the protagonist, so he's made as unobtrusively generically nerdy-Japanese-young-man as possible, because that's the target audience.

Yuuri is also supposed to look average and dorky, for different reasons. However, that doesn't change the fact that the end result still looks like every ecchi harem anime protagonist.

I will never get this sentiment of "oh, it looks like soandso" or "the fandom ruined it for me" and therefore maybe missing out on something you might like.

The Osomatsu-san fandom was pretty annoying on tumblr and everywhere before I had seen the series and I always thought: "What's so great about it?" but then I watched it and guess what? I really, really enjoyed it.

So at least give it a shot?
