Yep, this. You have to have compelling characters and an interesting plot, and also clues throughout that when your reader/viewer hits that "surprising yet inevitable" plot twist, they won't feel cheated. The Sixth Sense accomplishes this masterfully.

Yeah. And then you have to do it in such a way that your "clues" aren't too obvious otherwise your audience gets impatient that the author keeps hinting at something they already know the answer to.

I actually find it really fun to drop heavy-handed hints on purpose so that my readers get a lightbulb moment 1/3 of the way through, while my protag remains clueless until the big reveal at the end. Then we can laugh at my protag together as he bumbles along not knowing the secret everyone else knows.

Hilariously, roughly 1/2 of my readers catch on immediately, while the other 1/2 go "holy shit, I never saw that coming!" at the big reveal.
