I mooooostly agree. but I don't think Rachel is quite as bad as you do - she has some slightly more appealing qualities and slightly fewer annoying ones.

More importantly, instead of inflicting them on each other, I would prefer if they had just... not had Ross on the show at all. That would have been a much better outcome to me. There's plenty of characters you could replace him with.

Do you remember the Bananas in Pajamas? If you're too young, it's ok, just Google it & hate me for it after. But anyway. You could literally replace Ross with a Banana in Pajamas & the show would be better for it.

♫ Bananas - in pajamas - are coming down the stairs ♫

Huh. I watched this show in the 90s, and it didn't occur to me to judge these characters based on whether they were ~good people~ or not.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but at least for me, it's not really that I'm judging them based on whether they're bad people.

The problem is that they're bad people in a way that makes their storylines really annoying to watch, and also that the show often wants you to sympathize with them more than you do.

Don't know whether that makes me some kind of evil millennial or not.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there are evil gen xers who feel the same. :P

I thought their flaws made them fun.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of their flaws definitely did. Some of them definitely did not (for me at least). Monica being a control freak, or Phoebe being a space cadet, things like that are funny in the show even if they wouldn't be in real life. Ross being entitled and awful about relationships reallllllly is not.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
And you felt like the writers wanted us to sympathize with his entitlement? This is a really interesting perspective.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It's always tricky to talk about intent. That said, I think the writers viewed him as a flawed but basically sympathetic and likable romantic protagonist, and I can't really come around to the "basically sympathetic" part. And I think, if they understood some of his characteristics as flaws, it wasn't necessarily in the same way in which I understand them as flaws.

I feel like a lot of the seasons plots boil down to one of the friends doing a wrong thing that is an obviously wrong and jerkish thing to do, but you are still supposed to root for them because they're the main characters, so they're always right

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just shocked by the serious tone of this entire thread. Are we supposed to judge sitcom characters through these dramatic lenses? I don't remember any moment on this show that was treated as heavy, even the serious ones.

His dreams?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Wasn't a big part of the reason he wouldn't move to Paris because Ben is in New York? Yes, Emma is with Rachel and I didn't like how there wasn't more focus on that, because she's also Ross' kid, but there was talk of him visiting and her mom bringing Emma on trips back. Plus there was his new niece or nephew (that turned out to be both).

I don't much like Ross, but I wouldn't fault him for wanting to stay in New York.

Re: His dreams?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah but why did that have to include Rachel staying? Of course he wants to stay in New York. And she wants to leave. Nothing is wrong with either of those and it just feels too cheap to have her just go "fuck it."

(Anonymous) 2017-08-21 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy ending is Ross gets hit by a bus and dies instantly

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
why doesn't he just eat the other friends

I've never understood that line. Ross ISN'T the largest Friend. Tallest, sure, but Chandler and Joey both had more mass than him.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Are you sure about that? I could maaaaaybe see Joey but Chandler? Especially early season Chandler?

It took me about a minute to figure out who the people in the picture were.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad someone else agrees that Rachel could be just as bad as Ross

I also agree that they're better off together than inflicting their awful personalities on others (Although I do feel bad when I think too hard about Ben and Emma having to deal with the both of them as they grow up)

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I remember Rachel in earlier seasons being absolutely awful (especially to Ross's girlfriends) but I feel like she mellowed out later and became a better person? Unless there are some major moments I'm forgetting, I don't remember her really sabotaging the others

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember when she showed up during Ross second wedding just so she could try and talk him out of it

(Anonymous) 2017-08-22 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah, that was really bullshit... They were just awful to each other. But tbh in fairness, she did decide to NOT actually do anything and not mention her feelings until way later.

Well... you're not wrong...

(I hated them both, honestly).

Friends was my favorite when it first started, but by the end of the series, I hated all of them. The writers turned them all into awful, dis-likable caricatures of their season 1 fun selves.

That being said, I always liked Ross and Rachel together.
