But isn't this exactly what fanfiction was made for? There's no reasonable way to fit it into the actual narrative, and that's why you explore the possibility exhaustively through fan work.

Sure. But just because fanfiction exists doesn't mean people don't have feelings about wishing they could see their headcanon become canon. This isn't exactly a new fandom thing.
