If you could live forever, would you?

Forever meaning totally forever, can't die in any way even if you want to, past the end of our solar system and heat death of the universe and so on

Every time I see someone ask this question, I remember the ending of It's Such A Beautiful Day.

Also mmm I'd be curious to but i'd be just as curious about the hereafter.

Yes, absolutely. I would 100% be down with immortality. Not only for the "death is a terrifying concept" reasons, but because I would able to do so much stuff - I could have all the careers and experiences I could ever imagine wanting to have, and then some. Plus, actually being alive once we finally invent rapid space travel and can easily travel to other worlds, galaxies, etc would be amazing.

Nope

Nah.

Depends. Do I age? Or am I frozen at the age I am now? I'd hate to age (even very slowly) and spend the vast majority of my time as an old and decrepit mess. Also, would I have access to resources so I could enjoy living forever? I'm poor af right now, so living at this level would not be a good thing. But if it came with a means to obtain resources, I'd love to explore the world and see what happened in the future.

Nope.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Hell no. I already hate some of the more "modern" parts of the society and I doubt that I would have anything in common with people 500 years or even 200 years from now.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
How the fuck would it be in any way enjoyable to live beyond humanity? Even if you think you might get a kick out of wandering around alone with absolutely no one to talk with, what happens once our planet dies? Our sun? like you float around in space? Do I still feel pain? So I'm really fucking cold and floating aimlessly in space for forever? like whyyyy?

I'd live 500 years sure. Forever, fuck no, you'd go absolutely crazy and wish you could die.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck no.

Abso-fucking-lutely not.

Immortality is my most irrational fear. I can't think of anything worse than living forever.

I think I'd be down. The end result is gibbering madness, more likely than not, but being able to experience EVERYTHING between seems completely worth it.

...just throw in a healing factor, you know? Don't want to live half of my eternity with my intestines hanging out or something.

Depends, really. What kind of folks would I have in my life, what kind of paths would I take, etc. Would it be worth watching everyone I love die while time lost all meaning for me? I couldn't die, but what of my quality of life?

[personal profile] syncing_feeling 2017-08-24 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, some days I wake up and wish that I didn't, and other days I freak out because I'm nearing 30 and feel like I'm RUNNING OUT OF TIME

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can I swim around in space? Is there a guarantee I'll meet aliens?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
I would like to die ASAP.

idk, do I retain my mortal shape and senses? Or do I become some kind of godlike being like Dr. Manhattan? If it's the former, no, that sounds shitty. If it's the latter, and I can somehow fly around in space and stuff, sure, hell yeah. I can have a more fun life now and see lots of cool shit, and then be miserable later.

I'm terrified of death but if I lived forever I'd eventually get insanely bored. If there were a guarantee that I could find civilizations to entertain me, I'd do it, but if I'm going to outlive the universe and sit around picking my immortal nose, forget it.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-08-24 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
No. Not a chance. The idea of living forever or even for a few hundred years horrifies me.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'll just use the time I have the best I can. There wouldn't be much urgency with immortality, and I might stop being able to enjoy things after while, which would be a shame. Perfect health and strength while alive would not go amiss, though! 😃

Past the end of the universe? No thank you.

Past the end of this solar system? Sure. In a hypothetical where complete immortality is a possibility, I have no problem assuming that there will be other sapient species out there, and that humanity will develop ways to travel to other systems (even if it necessarily takes years), so I'd get a chance to meet them, and there'd probably be humans spread out across the galaxy.

But spending eternity in dark silence, unable even to stave off hunger? That's not a price worth paying for the perks of getting to see the stuff that came before.

Only if my existence remains pleasant and functional.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-24 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm terrified of dying but on the other hand I'm picturing myself alone in the freezing lightless airless void, clapping my hands together, trying to make a big enough bang to restart the universe. Also having a normal human body in sensory deprivation vacuum sounds like "no mouth, must scream" territory.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
No.
