(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 10:30 am (UTC)(link)Like Dexter, I watched the first season for the whole serial-killer-killing-serial-killers things. And then I forget how many episodes I watched into the second season, but it was all relationship drama and sex and I lost interest entirely. Did it eventually go back to crime-show-with-a-twist? I dunno, I stopped watching after the big plot was if Dexter would chose the rabid manic pixie dream girl or the damaged good girl. I guess other people might call it hitting its stride, but for me I just lost interest. I didn't want a relationship drama show.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-25 11:29 am (UTC)(link)This is exactly how I often feel as well. Though I think for me, it also depends on how good S1 was. If S1 was barely good enough to keep me watching, then S2 has a good chance of improvement in my eyes. If I really love S1 of a show, though, I almost start to dread S2 coming out, because the odds are I'll be dissatisfied with where the writers take things.
And the more enamored with a show's first season I am, the more likely I am to be dissatisfied with where the writers take things in S2. (I'm really scared about both Stranger Things and Dirk Gently for this reason. I loved S1 of both, so of course I'm going to come back for S2, but oh man, the odds of disappointment are painfully high.)
Whereas, if I get into a show later in its run, I start with a basic sense of the story's general shape over time. So even when I don't like a particular development all that much, I'm much more able to accept it as a part of the show, because I kind of already have? Like, I've been at least low-level aware since the beginning that eventually [X] was a thing that was going to happen, so when it does happen my reaction isn't, "This isn't the stORY I FELL IN LOVE WITH!" It's "Ah, okay, so this is when Thing X happens."
