You know whats great

Finding anything that confirms and reminds you that actually, no, you're not unconsciously a racist.

I mean, you always believe "I cant be a racist" but how would you know? If you got enough people telling you you are a racist, sometimes you can start to feel like "Shit, maybe they know something about me that I don't. Time to put down the Tiki Torch."

So, I made no secret of being EXTREMELY unhappy when MJ was turned from green eyed redhead to Zendaya. Also wasn't thrilled when Valkyrie was changed from a towering blonde amazon built like something out of Wagners wet dreams to Tessa Thompson.

All the other changes to the characters aside, there's no way to ignore that these were also changes to race. So when I react to the casting like:

The accusations are, and the worry is "do I just not want to see black faces in movies?!"

But it occurred to me that if was I doing racisms on both of those, I would expect the same reaction to have flared up in me over the new domino. It hasn't. I love the new domino. I think she's going to be fan-fucking-tastic.

TL;DR: HEY GUYS! I'M NOT A RACIST AFTER ALL!!!

Well, it's a 2:1 split, but I can even it up by bringing up Nick Fury?

I do also think it would have been dumb to change Danny Rand's race, so that brings us to down to 3:2

I can't think of any other race switches of the top of my head. Fire a few off and I'll let you know what I think, see how it comes out.

Point is, if all I cared about was "The White Genocide" in Hollywood, Domino should have pissed me off. Maybe it's not conclusive, but it does mean that for me it's not just the my subconscious only cares about keeping white characters white.

Personally I see a lot more difference in MJ and Valkyrie's changes than in Domino's.

MJ going from bright red and green to brown, or Valk going from golden to brown, is a much bigger and starker visual difference.

Domino's character design was always dark colors, so it's basically just a hairstyle change with the actress.

For example, I think Momoa looks fucking awesome as Aquaman... but he doesn't strike me as the old Aquaman because he's missing all the bright yellows and oranges I associate with the character.

Note I'm talking about character design colors over all, not skin tones here.

Whu? Domino was SUPER pale. Like deathly pale. I think Dom is just as stark a visual change as MJ. Maybe not as stark a visual change as Val, because she's so much shorter and MUCH less muscled than her comic counterpart, to I'll give you that, but going from Klan sheet white to dark skin, is a pretty big change.

Edit:

Oh, shit, you're talking about HAIR colour not skin colour. Ok, Yeah, I agree Dom had pitch black hair that has just become an afro now, yes I agree, less stark a contrast.

Also, with Momoa, I agree there is a stark change, but to be honest, I really don't care. I only ever like the brave and the bold Aqua man, and there was no chance we were getting him. I'm pretty happy with whatever they do to him, but MJ, Val and Dom, are all characters that I love - Or Loved. Fuck you Queseda.

Yeah, this is why I specified I wasn't talking about skin tones. From thematic perspective, Domino's actress is still pale enough to contrast starkly with the dark outfit she wears, so the visual theme of lighter skin, darker outfit, and the overall color scheme that is lacking vibrant color, is present. Original Domino's color scheme was mainly grayscale, and brown is not far from black - it would have been more of a stark change to suddenly make her a redhead and add vibrant color.

God that would have been horrible...

Yep. Ginger Domino would be terrible even if you kept her white. Blond white Domino would be terrible too.

On the other hand if you made her Asian or Latina and kept the color scheme that'd work fine.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

I really really don't love what they did with Val, tho. 8(

Me neither, to be honest.

I mean, on one hand, I am glad that POC are getting more roles in superhero things. It's about time. Like the Aquaman thing, it totally makes sense for him to be played by a Hawaiian, to the point where it's like, why wasn't he originally that all along, it makes so much more sense. On a meta level I'm happy to see it.

On the other hand, from a purely visual standpoint, it's not making me see the character I know of, so it's weird.

Is it loaded with typos? Genuine question, it could well be loaded with typos.

Oh, or is it that I never explained what an MJ, a Zendaya, a Valkyrie, or a Tessa Thompson is?

It's about white characters being played by non-white actors.
