Agree with your last sentence completely, but disagree with your first.

I don't equate a teen with a child. There's a world of difference between 13 and 19, but that whole in-between stage is the transition from child to adult, and it seems weird to devolve them to children. A "kid", on the other hand, seems to me a more colloquial term, not necessarily denoting children, in the same way that "you guys" is not necessarily referring to boys/men.

Oh, and yes, this is more a semantic argument around teen=child vs a question of sexual activity. As mentioned, I agree with your first sentence. I just don't like to conflate teenagers with children.
