I know right? And its hilarious and pathetic how so many are using the opinions of their non fandom friends as a trump card and indicator of how most of the world thinks.

People who clutched pearls about purity and demonized their detractors
have existed for centuries, they were eventually going to make their way into fandom. And eventually they'll phase out. Sometimes when I get fed up with them I just have to tell myself that.

I have been in fandom since before online fandom was a thing, and I can tell you, the idea that heavily underage fanfic should be accepted as just another kink is what's new. It may have existed before, but it wasn't very prevalent. (Excluding anime fandoms, which may be a different case.)

Mind defining what you mean by "heavily underage"? The discussions I've seen about this topic on both here and outside of F!S have been about teens, and usually in the 15-16 bracket.

I don't think they're using it as a trump card. They seem to be saying, If you're feeling super weird about how fandom expects everyone to think this stuff is fine, talk to someone you know who isn't in fandom about it and get their perspective.

I know for me this has born out in the past.

Fandom has always been a relatively safe space for women to explore those fantasies they couldn't disclose to "normal" people. Of course "normal" people don't get what we do. Most of them think slash is pretty weird, too, A good portion of the fic on AO3 would be banned on other erotica sites and unsellable on Amazon. Using "normal" people as a gauge is weird because having a safe haven from "normal" people has historically been the whole point of fandom.

Seriously, why should I give a fuck about what the average person out there thinks of my hobby? The average person has some pretty fucked-up beliefs about a lot of things, especially insofar as they touch upon issues of oppression.

right? and like, even the most "open-minded liberal" non-fandom individual is still going to not understand the culture of fandom, its history and its relationship to womens sexuality, so trying to drag them into it by being like "SEE, MY NORMAL FRIENDS THINK YOU'RE WEIRDOS" is so utterly disingenuous

Ah, okay, this clarifies things. See, I love and respect my "normal" friends. They're just like fandom people, expect none of them think getting off on hebephilic fantasies and the like is cool. I'll just stick with them, and the significant percentage of fandom who continues to uphold the level of relative sanity. *thumbs up*
