Not the OP, but that's kind of how I feel about people who want every character they see on TV to be a role model of proper behaviour. Did the Comics Code work? Did teaching children (of all ages, lol) that CRIME DOES NOT PAY stop any criminals? Has sanitising cartoons of violence made our culture less violent? How do we compare to Japan, where the animation for all ages is pretty graphic and all of it has to be cut to meet US standards?
The OP is right. Good fiction and art reflects the society that produced it. Societies do not change because people take all the scary evil shit off TV and out of books. They change because these things are shown for what they truly are, not just in a way where someone always comes along to show the one doing wrong the error of their ways (i.e. "gets called on it").
I don't even think Dean is a misogynist, but that's neither here nor there. It will be artistically inappropriate for Dean to say "bitch" when we live in a world where guys who look and dress and talk like Dean don't usually say "bitch". I would not mind living in that world, but I don't want TV to tell me we do when we actually don't. The racist words that are currently not acceptable on TV are not unacceptable because someone decided "OMG we'd better not have racist people on TV!" They are unacceptable because people in our society do not in fact routinely say those words in public places and are pretty much uniformly offended by hearing them.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can say that my own complaints and concerns re: misogyny and SPN do not spring from a desire to "censor the media." Do I believe that showing graphic violence and sexism on television makes people violent and sexist? No, not particularly. The relationship between media and viewers is far more complex than that. I agree that shows that only included good people who behaved in ways that accorded with my own personal politics would be boring, problematic, and utterly unsuccessful entertainment.
However, the problem with SPN is not that it presents complex characters who embody and represent complex and opposing views of the world and how to live in it. It is that, this season in particular, it has represented Dean's sexist and homophobic comments as utterly normal, o.k., and in fact, given his heroic and popular status in the show, as worthy of emulation. FURTHERMORE, the posts upon posts upon posts from viewers saying things along the lines of "sexism makes Dean awesome," "sexism makes Dean a REAL MAN," and "sexism is what we can expect from guys who look like him" (i.e. working-class) all demonstrate the extent to which the show has succeeded in portraying such sexism as made of awesome.
tl;dr, I know. But the continued desire to oppose critics of the show's sexism this season with comments that they want hugs, puppies, and censorship are MAKING ME CRAZY.
