At least from the people I've talked to, the US is still seen as a land of opportunity and they truly believe that with enough hard work, anybody, no matter how lowly they were in their home country, can make their dreams come true. I thought it was interesting that a lot of people come over with the idea to make enough money to go back home and live comfortably there, but then something happens in their home country and/or they put down roots and end up not going back. Our neighbors are from the Philippines and intended to return to their home country after a few years of hard work, but they're scared of Duterte, so they're going to stay for a while.
