Someone asked this on my dashboard and it's interesting - for Immigrants, why do you want to come to America specifically? If nothing was barring your entry to anywhere in the world (except the country you had to evacuate), what is so appealing about us?

Language, for one. A lot of people at least have basic English skills. Also, America is pretty damn rich and there's also a lot of space.

But while america may be rich, it's not really to the betterment of it's citizens.

The rich institutions make money off of the fact that wages don't keep up with the cost of living.

It doesn't have to be true for people to have some illusions about it though. To quote: "There are no cats in America and the roads are paved with cheese!"

I forget that we have a lot more space than a lot of European countries.

At least from the people I've talked to, the US is still seen as a land of opportunity and they truly believe that with enough hard work, anybody, no matter how lowly they were in their home country, can make their dreams come true. I thought it was interesting that a lot of people come over with the idea to make enough money to go back home and live comfortably there, but then something happens in their home country and/or they put down roots and end up not going back. Our neighbors are from the Philippines and intended to return to their home country after a few years of hard work, but they're scared of Duterte, so they're going to stay for a while.

Several reasons: Where I live (some mysterious jungle in Latin America), it has to do with money and sending said money back to your family here.

A dollar here costs around Q7.50 (a bit less right now). So imagine hypothetically making US$1,000.00 a month and sending US$500.00 to your family, they would be receiving an average of Q3,750.00 monthly, which is more than a month's salary here. Also lack of jobs and foreign investment: here you could get a job for less than minimum wage (Q2,700 aprox.) for a 10-12 hour job. Also lack of foreign investment = lack of jobs for both poor people and college graduates.

I've also heard about and seen many people who send money back so their families are able to open up small business here.

Poverty is also a huge factor. Even if you end up finishing high-school, many can't afford college and end up doing minimum wage jobs. Others end up doing independent jobs but that doesn't mean it's a steady income.

Also some people are escaping gang violence and with the above it's a good reason why they would flee to the US.

This is what the immigrants are here in my city for, the money thing that is. It make a lot of sense.

Americans (and Western Europeans, Canadians, Australians... insert pretty much any first world country here) tend to have a pretty dim view of their own country. But, for someone from an actually shitty country, America is fucking awesome. It's a matter of perspective and privilege, that Americans can't see this. Simply living in America, even if you're the poorest of poor, gives you free or easy access to a lot of things that most people in the world will never get to experience.

In America children get to go to school for free. There are breakfast and lunch programs to help poor kids eat. There are literally hundreds of social programs in place to help the poor, for healthcare, food, shelter, clothing, etc. For a small amount of money, your home gets clean running water. Roads are well maintained and SAFE to drive on. (Have you ever watched Russian dash cam vids? I mean, jesus christ!) Even the most violent parts of America have very little crime compared to the nicest parts of many other countries. Americans make a fuckton of money compared to most other areas, you can make a living AND support your family back home.

And, compared to many many places, America really still is the land of opportunity. It's easy to look at the gap between rich and poor here and be horrified at how bad it is. But, in many poorer countries the average poor person lives in a fucking shack where they work themselves to death and maybe slowly starve so their kid can go to school, and they will never ever get a chance to make more money or start a business or anything else like that.

That's a really good point. Even my being disadvantaged in this country puts me above a lot of other people, and I didn't realize that.

It's a topic I've seen a lot over the years, esp in liberal circles. Why would anyone come here when there's so many problems, like America can't even fix the water in Flint. But, (at least when I was a kid and I doubt its changed much most places) in Russia that was just how the water was everywhere. You just didnt drink it from the tap or at all. There's lots of parts of the world where people wear masks ro work everday to block the smog. Or gay people like me, or women who aren't submissive enough, just get killed. I grew up in a "nice" apartments, imagine the shittiest apartment block you've ever seen then add twice as many people and remove the walls between each family.

America is a fucking paradise.

You also have to consider the fact that immigrants often want to go places where there are already other people from their own country. Many are coming to reunite with family who emigrated before them. I've been reading up on Canadian immigration, for example, and while their Maritime provinces are in dire need of fresh blood, most immigrants coming to Canada are settling in major urban centers like Toronto and Vancouver, where there are established immigrant communities.

The US, in spite of everything, is still considered a melting pot. There are many long-established immigrant communities going back decades, which explains why more immigrants continue to want to move there.
