Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

Americans (and Western Europeans, Canadians, Australians... insert pretty much any first world country here) tend to have a pretty dim view of their own country. But, for someone from an actually shitty country, America is fucking awesome. It's a matter of perspective and privilege, that Americans can't see this. Simply living in America, even if you're the poorest of poor, gives you free or easy access to a lot of things that most people in the world will never get to experience.

In America children get to go to school for free. There are breakfast and lunch programs to help poor kids eat. There are literally hundreds of social programs in place to help the poor, for healthcare, food, shelter, clothing, etc. For a small amount of money, your home gets clean running water. Roads are well maintained and SAFE to drive on. (Have you ever watched Russian dash cam vids? I mean, jesus christ!) Even the most violent parts of America have very little crime compared to the nicest parts of many other countries. Americans make a fuckton of money compared to most other areas, you can make a living AND support your family back home.

And, compared to many many places, America really still is the land of opportunity. It's easy to look at the gap between rich and poor here and be horrified at how bad it is. But, in many poorer countries the average poor person lives in a fucking shack where they work themselves to death and maybe slowly starve so their kid can go to school, and they will never ever get a chance to make more money or start a business or anything else like that.

That's a really good point. Even my being disadvantaged in this country puts me above a lot of other people, and I didn't realize that.

It's a topic I've seen a lot over the years, esp in liberal circles. Why would anyone come here when there's so many problems, like America can't even fix the water in Flint. But, (at least when I was a kid and I doubt its changed much most places) in Russia that was just how the water was everywhere. You just didnt drink it from the tap or at all. There's lots of parts of the world where people wear masks ro work everday to block the smog. Or gay people like me, or women who aren't submissive enough, just get killed. I grew up in a "nice" apartments, imagine the shittiest apartment block you've ever seen then add twice as many people and remove the walls between each family.

America is a fucking paradise.
