Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

This isn't about snarky, edgy questions, but things you KNOW will be taken the wrong way (or just not seriously) if you asked them IRL.

Someone asked this on my dashboard and it's interesting - for Immigrants, why do you want to come to America specifically? If nothing was barring your entry to anywhere in the world (except the country you had to evacuate), what is so appealing about us?

Language, for one. A lot of people at least have basic English skills. Also, America is pretty damn rich and there's also a lot of space.

At least from the people I've talked to, the US is still seen as a land of opportunity and they truly believe that with enough hard work, anybody, no matter how lowly they were in their home country, can make their dreams come true. I thought it was interesting that a lot of people come over with the idea to make enough money to go back home and live comfortably there, but then something happens in their home country and/or they put down roots and end up not going back. Our neighbors are from the Philippines and intended to return to their home country after a few years of hard work, but they're scared of Duterte, so they're going to stay for a while.

Several reasons: Where I live (some mysterious jungle in Latin America), it has to do with money and sending said money back to your family here.

A dollar here costs around Q7.50 (a bit less right now). So imagine hypothetically making US$1,000.00 a month and sending US$500.00 to your family, they would be receiving an average of Q3,750.00 monthly, which is more than a month's salary here. Also lack of jobs and foreign investment: here you could get a job for less than minimum wage (Q2,700 aprox.) for a 10-12 hour job. Also lack of foreign investment = lack of jobs for both poor people and college graduates.

I've also heard about and seen many people who send money back so their families are able to open up small business here.

Poverty is also a huge factor. Even if you end up finishing high-school, many can't afford college and end up doing minimum wage jobs. Others end up doing independent jobs but that doesn't mean it's a steady income.

Also some people are escaping gang violence and with the above it's a good reason why they would flee to the US.

Americans (and Western Europeans, Canadians, Australians... insert pretty much any first world country here) tend to have a pretty dim view of their own country. But, for someone from an actually shitty country, America is fucking awesome. It's a matter of perspective and privilege, that Americans can't see this. Simply living in America, even if you're the poorest of poor, gives you free or easy access to a lot of things that most people in the world will never get to experience.

In America children get to go to school for free. There are breakfast and lunch programs to help poor kids eat. There are literally hundreds of social programs in place to help the poor, for healthcare, food, shelter, clothing, etc. For a small amount of money, your home gets clean running water. Roads are well maintained and SAFE to drive on. (Have you ever watched Russian dash cam vids? I mean, jesus christ!) Even the most violent parts of America have very little crime compared to the nicest parts of many other countries. Americans make a fuckton of money compared to most other areas, you can make a living AND support your family back home.

And, compared to many many places, America really still is the land of opportunity. It's easy to look at the gap between rich and poor here and be horrified at how bad it is. But, in many poorer countries the average poor person lives in a fucking shack where they work themselves to death and maybe slowly starve so their kid can go to school, and they will never ever get a chance to make more money or start a business or anything else like that.

You also have to consider the fact that immigrants often want to go places where there are already other people from their own country. Many are coming to reunite with family who emigrated before them. I've been reading up on Canadian immigration, for example, and while their Maritime provinces are in dire need of fresh blood, most immigrants coming to Canada are settling in major urban centers like Toronto and Vancouver, where there are established immigrant communities.

The US, in spite of everything, is still considered a melting pot. There are many long-established immigrant communities going back decades, which explains why more immigrants continue to want to move there.

In regards to sounding like an idiot. If I guy does jumping jacks (or any jumping) naked, does it hurt his dick? If I jump wihtout a sports bra it feels like my breasts are going to rip off my chest.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

You're more likely to hurt your balls than your dick

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The dick flopping around doesn't hurt, really, but the danger is that you're going to whang your balls into something and that would hurt.

I think the average dick and balls weighs less than the average breast but I haven't done the research to say for sure.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this must be fairly weight dependent.

I'm female, and I just did thirty jumping jacks, sans support, to see if my breasts would start to hurt. They didn't. Not even a twinge.

I'm a 32C, so not minuscule, but certainly not large.

Is being pro-same sex marriage but anti-polygamy hypocritical?

It's usually used as an argument against sex-same marriage. That's not how I mean it.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Legally? Polygamy is a whole can of worms that is harder to figure out than marriages between any two people.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I would say it depends on the reasons why you're anti-polygamy, and whether you mean only polygamy as in one husband and many wives, or all polyamory relationships in general

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think ethically speaking, if you claim to respect same-sex marriage then you should be open to respecting the relationships of all consenting adults, including polygamy/polyamory.

But legally speaking, polygamy is a lot more difficult. Even putting aside the almost inherent sexism of one man + many wives, and equating any gender combination, what's the limit? What exactly are the benefits of marrying twenty-three people if you choose? If you divorce, how could that be done? Can I just marry all my friends if I want, even if we're not having sex? Do I get visas if they are international people?

It's extremely confusing. It might be that in the future, we have to examine what use marriage is, or if it should be redefined to some kind of "adoption" concept that could include multiple people, even platonic friends. But I don't think that'll be an easy thing to figure out.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm pro-same sex marriage because it takes place between two consenting adults. I'm against polygamy because in practice, it rarely takes place between consenting adults. It's more like creepy religious dudes (Christian sects or Muslim, maybe others, but those are the 2 main ones), groom and/or coerce young women into marrying older dudes who already have multiple wives and tend to be abusive and view women as property. So, I'd say all the things that make me PRO the one make me ANTI the other. Makes sense?

I suppose theoretically if there were multiple consenting adults who weren't groomed or coerced, it would be fine. But in real life, that doesn't seem to be what happens.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-28 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on why. If everyone involved consents, I don't personally give a fuck, but if I was a divorce lawyer or something I'd get sued for refusing to take on poly families' cases because damn what a headache, two people splitting is bad enough to wrangle.

Is it true that people smell differently to different people due to their diet? Like how white people are supposed to smell like sour milk to asians, Indians smell like curry etc?

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I can buy Indians smelling like curry if they cook it alot. that stuff penetrates.

Don't know the answer to your question, unless the person in question has been cooking, or maybe eating a ton of garlic. But I'm white and have heard that apparently wet white people smell like wet dog? Idk.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Your race or ethnicity can't affect how other people smell to you. The only truth in there is that your diet can affect how you smell, and people with a rare degree of smell sensitivity (which has nothing to do with race, some people just have it) might notice that for example, Indian people are more likely to smell like curry than white people because curry is much more commonly eaten in India than any predominantly white country.

The only time I notice how people smell is if they're not wearing deoderant or they used too much body spray.

Re: Things you've wondered but can't ask without sounding like a jerk or an idiot

(Anonymous) 2017-08-27 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a very sensitive sense of smell (not a fun thing, believe me) and I've noticed that sometimes what I eat tends to affect the smell of my sweat. Which seems rather odd. I'd say there was a good chance that before people slathered on perfumes and deodorants that people could smell things like that a bit more--what you'd eaten recently, or regularly, etc.

I know the Native Americans were said to be able to track early white settlers by their smell...but they may have just had really bad hygiene, too. I'm pretty sure bathing wasn't particularly common back then among the white settlers.

What is with making fun of people who don't like spicy food? Does chicken on it's own really have no flavor to people who like spicy food? It has flavor to me, and I really like how chicken taste. Why does this make me worthy of ridicule? I just don't get it.

Ok, when a MtF transsexual has the operation, they make the new labia from the shaft of the penis, yes? Now I'm iffy on the internal biology of the cock, but as I understand it, increased blood flow through the tissue of the penis is what makes it erect. As I understand it all that stuff is still there, it has just been re-shaped, yes?

So what exactly is done to prevent your pussy from getting hard?
