Re: Aside to my thread up there about Dog Whores and Dog Pimps

It's the people who manage prostitutes, yes.

Follow up question. Why does pimp seem like a vile word you would only use to discredit or insult someone, but Madam seems... almost respectful?

I'm assuming because of the imagery it conjures up and the fact that "madam" is a respectful form of address while, to my knowledge, "pimp" has never been respectable.

possibly because a madam tends to manage a house of prostitution, where the girls live and ply their trade, while a pimp tends to toss his girls out into the street to pick up johns no matter how terrible the weather is. Also (no idea how accurate it is) madams tend to have the rep of semi-protecting their girls from abusive johns, or at least of sort of trying to keep them in good health, while pimps tend to have the rep of being abusive jerks themselves who beat the girls up a lot. Also because a woman leading a brothel would tend to be a former (or still current) hooker herself who rose through the ranks, whereas a pimp is generally just a guy who employs the hookers and neither knows nor cares what the life of the "working girl" is actually like. Madam comes off as a hooker who showed incentive and got promoted, and manages the business with an insider's perspective. Pimp comes off as a guy who just exploits and uses the girls purely for his own gain.

+1 to all of this.

Also, whether or not this is usually true in reality, pimps tend to be depicted as doing things that keep their girls indebted to them in order to make it so they can't leave or assert any real control over who and what they do. Whereas Madams are generally not depicted as doing things to keep their girls indebted to them, and are usually very accepting when one of their girls makes a decision to leave.

You live in a dream world. A dream fucking world.

Women involved in the prostitution industry are not fucking respected.

While men have turned "pimp" into a word that somehow equals respect and coolness (it's something you do to turn a car fancier!).

Really, so "Madam" conjures up images of Violence, Rape, Forced Drug use, and all other kinds of abuse? Or are those connotations INFINTLY more associated with the word Pimp?

While men have turned "pimp" into a word that somehow equals respect and coolness

Only in a very specific context, Like "Thug" has also become a word associated with a cool disregard for the law, but it, like pimp, is hardly respectable. It is like saying "You excel at being disreputable" You might find that cool, but you would not use that persona to get a well paying job.

Likewise a "Pimped" car is more showy, but it is by no-means respected by car enthusiasts. it is considered remarkably un-classy and vulgar.

Pimps are gross, madams are respectable, now I'm thinking maybe they are not the same thing - I.E a pimp is not just a male madam, in which case, I wonder what would be the word for a male madam?

Oh, and for the record, you're right, Women involved in prostitution are not respected. In fact, no-one involved with prostitution is respected as I define it above. but the word Madam does carry significantly more respectability than the word pimp.
