People just read things in different ways.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think this is a big thing online in general. I see SO many dumb (possibly deliberate) misunderstandings that lead to yelling/wank, as well as people jumping to ridiculous conclusions and treating them like facts and yelling at people/causing wank. I hate this trend. I really dislike being misunderstood and not being able to clear up the misunderstanding (and someone deliberately misunderstanding will almost never let you clear it up or listen to any attempt to) and it makes me very cautious about talking to people.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There definitely are, anon. People thrive off of being outraged, and the wank has sustained this community. I'm guilty of it, too - overreacting and reading something purposefully as negative as possible, though I try to be less of a dick than I used to be.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? You would say that you're doing it in bad faith or intentionally reading it incorrectly?

I mean, people get up in their emotions and say things that are more extreme than they would say if they were being totally calm and rational. I understand that. But you really read something negatively when you know that's not the correct reading?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What's difficult to understand about that? It's what you've just done.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I asked a question because I was surprised by what I understood them to be saying, and because I wasn't sure if I understood it right. I really was not trying to be polemic, and if the reply came across as polemic, then I apologize.

I ONCE WROTE A TWENTY PAGE PAPER COMPARING THE THEMES IN AMY TAN NOVELS! THAT WAS FIVE MORE PAGES THAT REQUIRED! Call me illiterate. I can read real good.

My iPad thinks your SAT score is a phone number and i don't know why but I can't stop laughing about it

Yeah, there's a lot of them around. I'm waiting on a secret to be posted that may be misconstrued by people like that. It's partially my fault because I probably should've gone into a bit more detail, but I didn't want it to end up as a wall-o'-text secret. Basically there'll always be someone waiting to clutch their pearls over something.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's called having a chip on your shoulder and assuming the person meant the worst, instead of assuming they meant it innocuously.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But I also think there are times where people say things that they think are fine that other people legitimately think are objectionable.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I posted a secret once that I figured a lot of people would misconstrue and was pleasantly surprised that everyone understood exactly what I meant. And lots of people agreed with me!

The wall of text secrets are the ones most likely to cause wank, especially the ones that cover multiple points. People latch onto one part of the secret and react to it. Short and direct secrets rarely stir the pot but they also don't usually get much response at all.

Yeah, that happens.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Also, sometimes secrets are badly written - like when the secret poster comments to clarify and the clarification is not at all what most people seemed to think it was about.

Of course, if the secret poster uses belligerent or hostile language, I think commenters are less likely to give them the benefit of the doubt.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I mean yeah, there are definitely people who are just trying to stir the pot. But there are plenty of people who just can't read for shit, you know? And there are people who don't express themselves as clearly as they think they do. It's many factors, not just your single explanation.

Oh, yeah. I can buy that. I kind think that there are people who do that all across the real and virtual world. They're fucking everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I think it's mostly trolls because when there's something going on that keeps people like that occupied the place is much quieter and saner. It's almost weird, because nobody is purposely baiting and misunderstanding stuff!

Yes, obviously people disagree or misunderstand things sometimes. But mostly--trolls.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, tbh the big wank drama threads ARE the most fun. I'm not really interested in threads where everyone is saying some variation of "aww OP, I agree".

I think a lot of people subconsciously misconstrue things because 1) they thrive on the drama, and 2) the secret reminded them of something they're really steamed about, regardless of whether it's actually what OP meant.

I mean, think about it. Fandom is all about a love of stories, and you don't have a story without some sort of conflict.

Regardless, I wouldn't take it too personally. The way people respond says more about them than it does about OP most of the time.

This brings to mind that OUAT secret a few months back where a woman revealed that she pretended to watch the show when her boyfriend was gone because he thought it was 'cute' when really she was a closeted bisexual who watched gay porn

Everyone ignored that part of the secret and called her a special snowflake for calling the show cute

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
link?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
It was so many months ago, I'm not sure how long it would take me to find it

I just remember everyone's negative response to it. I knew there would be a few people giving her hell, but aside from maybe three people, the whole thread was just people giving her shit about calling the show cute and saying what she was doing was basically the same as cheating on someone

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-08-30 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah!? What's that supposed to mean!?

I will let you know my mother is a SAINT! I also can't believe you did that with that hotdog and the clown, op. That's fucked up.
