It is just a rumour right now but I really hope it turns out to be true! I adore him in scripted shows and think he would be a fun and funny companion.

But if it isn't him, I do still hope they have an older companion. I'd love to see one who has an established career, kids, mortgage, and all the day to day stuff that makes running off such an attractive fantasy for most adults. I would love to see the conflicts and internal struggles and the joy at just saying fuck it.

Okay but why the fuck do they HAVE to have a white man in the TARDIS who is probably going to be having a romance with the Doctor?

...have you seen the episodes already? I didn't think they'd even filmed them yet but I guess I missed the big Thirteen and White Man Companion romance show. It must have been great if your main complaint is that White Man Companion is a white man.

Because I, frankly, don't trust them. The other anon addressed another thing I'm leery of. Because of a trend in media where female protags are outshined by their white, male companions who tend to also be their romantic interest. Telling me to just "wait and see" and not be leery or untrusting because of a trend in media is like saying you should wait and see if that puss-filled boil will go away on its own instead of being leery and complaining to a doctor.

Examples? Because hand on heart, I cannot think of a single BBC programme that has done that recently, nor any British programme for that matter.

No way is Bradley Walsh going to be a romance. He's not that guy in British television. He's more a comedian who can handle drama roles, not a romantic leader.

I'm just imagining them trying to write a middle-aged male companion to a female Doctor without subconsciously sliding him into the position of an authority figure, and it makes me really really really leery.

Same. I don't mind the idea of an older companion (though I really prefer the Doctor to be visibly older than the companions), but having it be a middle-aged man with a younger female Doctor is just kind of like...eh, isn't that the dynamic of most shows, where the young woman is supposedly more brilliant and yet the man still needs to explain things to her? I just don't trust them to do it right.

I'd be fine with like a much older companion, grandparent-age (*cough*BernardCribbins*cough*). Just not, dad/TV-romantic-interest age. Unless they make it cool, which maybe they will, who knows.

If you're interested in a fantasy adventure show with the protagonist being an adult trying to balance raising kids, having a mortgage, family life etc, with being the chosen one of another realm, then that's basically the plot of a British TV show called Yonderland.
