Re: Adaptations

My favorite Beauty and the Beast book adaptation is Rose Daugher, despite Robin McKinley's total inability to write endings that also shows up in Beauty. My favorite kid's book adaptation of BatB is the one with illustrations by Max Eilenberg, even though I don't actually like the illustrations much. All that said, is the romance novel any good? Who's it by? When was it written? (I was expecting a lot more Beauty/Beast fic out of the recent Disney version--not to mention a lot less Gaston-centric fic. Blech.)

ayrt

The novel is part of Harlequin's Presents imprint. It's The Prince's Captive Virgin by Maisy Yates. It was just published in June of this year.

I'm only three chapters in and it's okay, but it's not great. I think this is the first time I've encountered the cliche "She let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding" in actual published fiction as opposed to fanfic. I'm not expecting much out of it, to be honest. I just want an easy, familiar read.

Condolences about the lack of BatB fic post-2017 movie. I'll commiserate with you on an explosion of Gaston fic. Luke Evans isn't even attractive imo.

Sorry, that's Maisey Yates.

Sorry about the so-so romance novel. Maybe it started out as fic, or the author started out in fandom, and that's where the fic-phrases are from? As for Gaston, I think Evans is good-looking, but I don't find him attractive and also, well, he played Gaston. It wouldn't matter if his looks made my underwear melt away. Live action Gaston was even nastier than the animated version.

At least he could sing, unlike Belle (and sort of the Beast, although they did so much to Dan Stevens' voice even aside from autotune it was hard to tell what they started with.)
And I've kind of been spoiled for Beauty and the Beast romance/erotica by the Belle/Rumplestiltskin (from Once Upon a Time) fandom, even if more than half of it involves a no-longer-physically-beastly Beast, and when he is a Beast he's more lizard than Disney's lion/wildebeast/boar/whatever, despite all the Disney shout-outs.
