Adaptations

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What is the best adaptation you've seen of your favorite story?

What's the worst?

Inspired by the fact that I'm reading an erotic romance novel retelling of Beauty and the Beast, most heavily inspired by the Disney movie.

Cirque Du Freak got both a movie by Universal (which sucked) and a manga (which was actually pretty cool).

I've never read the manga of the last book....I should find it.

I think the movie Interview With A Vampire is WAY better than the book. The book was boring as fuck.

Minority Report is a fantastic movie that is also better than the source material.

And while I think Shadowhunters is a pretty terrible show, it is way better than what I read of the original books.

And the World War Z movie is the worst adaptation of the source material ever. :(

I'm a videogame fan who knows the name Uwe Boll. I can literally not choose between the worst.

Best... I really liked watchmen.

Ooh, also, not a straight adaption, but discworld made some wonderful games.

Before Pratchett's death? He was a pretty avid gamer, wonder if he played any?

Most recent WORST is Death Note. omg I cannot get over it. My inner 17-year-old Death Note fangirl was in tears of anguish watching it.

Best adaptation? I liked the LotR movies better than the books. Also, Howl's Moving Castle.

Netflix Death Note made me laugh so hard. It was just so ridiculous, though not as bad as Dragon Ball Evolution.

The 1985 Anne of Green Gables adaptation didn't stick strictly to the book, but in spirit it is the absolute best version of the story. The cast is perfect, the setting is perfect and Megan Followes is unmatchable as Anne Shirley.

I've never read the book because the show was perfect enough for me!

I love the books, but in a different way. They're a bit more repetitive than the films, but they also have a lot more lovely detail. Very worth a read if you enjoyed the movie!

Yes! How could I forget these. I love them.

The Witcher video games. I never minded the changes and love how much of the source material they left in. Yennifer and the djinn in Witcher 3 is a stand out example because it's one of the more popular stories and there's a whole quest built around it. But there's lots of little nods scattered throughout and some I have only noticed during a replay.

My favorite Beauty and the Beast book adaptation is Rose Daugher, despite Robin McKinley's total inability to write endings that also shows up in Beauty. My favorite kid's book adaptation of BatB is the one with illustrations by Max Eilenberg, even though I don't actually like the illustrations much. All that said, is the romance novel any good? Who's it by? When was it written? (I was expecting a lot more Beauty/Beast fic out of the recent Disney version--not to mention a lot less Gaston-centric fic. Blech.)

ayrt

The novel is part of Harlequin's Presents imprint. It's The Prince's Captive Virgin by Maisy Yates. It was just published in June of this year.

I'm only three chapters in and it's okay, but it's not great. I think this is the first time I've encountered the cliche "She let out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding" in actual published fiction as opposed to fanfic. I'm not expecting much out of it, to be honest. I just want an easy, familiar read.

Condolences about the lack of BatB fic post-2017 movie. I'll commiserate with you on an explosion of Gaston fic. Luke Evans isn't even attractive imo.

Best adaption - Considering the competition, the recent Hobbit movies.
Worst Adaption - The HOBBIT 1966 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRqbdpbDwVo

Just watch it, at least the first 20 seconds or so, it's amazingly awful.

Wanted to clarify, this is not the Rankin Bass animated movie people might remember from the 70s, this is a different one.

For me the LoTR movies are more enjoyable than the books and I like the books just fine, I just really love the movies.

The worst was probably the Eragon movie and the thing is the book wasn't all that good in the first place but the movie was somehow worse.

the Hanna Barbera Alice in Wonderland was really horrible.

I liked the Pride & Prejudice adaptation with Colin Firth. It wasn't perfect but it was very good.

I hated the Hitchhiker's Guide movie. I think I'm mostly a fan of the original radio show to be honest.

The Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice adaptation is very good.

It's funny, I was reading the last few replies, debating what my answers would be, if I have any, and I really do love The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Have you seen that? And if so, what did you think?

The Colin Firth P&P adaptation is my favorite. Can't stand the more recent one with Matthew MacFayden.

LOTR is still my favorite movie trilogy, even though I don't think it is a perfect adaption. There are a lot of problems with it. But I still think it does a good job of introducing people to Middle Earth.

Another good one is Silence of the Lambs. And Red Dragon is pretty good too.

The Anne of Green Gables movies. Well, the first two. The third can't even really be called an adaption.

Princess Bride is a good adaption. And of course To Kill a Mockingbird is an amazing adaption. The Green Mile is great. For best adaption, the Patrick Stewart Christmas Carol (though I prefer the Muppet one).

Worst would be Wizard of Oz. I don't care how many awards it won, it was a bad adaption.

Also, while I enjoyed the Harry Potter movies at the time, and while the adult cast for the most part was amazing, I have to say these movies have gone way downhill in my mind.

The Hobbit movies. I still like a few small parts of them. But on the whole horrible adaptions.

Worst: Sailor Moon Crystal. It felt like the people responsible couldn't decide if it was supposed to be a straight adaptation of the manga or its own thing, so they ended up with something that failed at both. Literally the only reason it's the closest adaptation to the manga is because the '90's anime and the live action show are so radically different.

Prisoner of Azkaban is a close second. It's my favorite book, and the movie was a start of several trends I dislike in the rest of the movies.

Best: I liked the Stardust and Coraline movies better than the books.

I liked Howl's Moving Castle despite/because it was so different.
