I kinda wanna guess at the fandom. A similar thing happened to a dear friend of mine too. They posted a really great fic but didn't reference a popular fanon thing in the way that the rest of the comm felt they should, and they got dogpiled in the comments. The real kicker is that they were so gatekeeper-y about it, instead of saying 'hey, welcome to the fandom newbie, nice writing,we're glad to have a new writer join in. Btw, that one minor detail, the fandom tends to approach this way and since you did it this other way, it could confuse readers.'

So, my friend dropped that comm like a hot potato.
