Aw, I wish you had too. :(

I really don't get it when people try to push concrit onto writers when they state they don't want it. Especially for fanfic. Like, it's not the end of the world when a writer doesn't take concrit. Some people get so personally offended if you state you don't want concrit.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Especially since concrit often seems to mean "don't write that, write what I want you to write, the way I want you to write it!" Some people seem very unaware of how obnoxious that is...

"Some people get so personally offended if you state you don't want concrit."

Egos basically. For many people, a writer rejecting their suggestion is a huge blow to their ego. They get into their heads that "criticism" is all-important and writers HAVE to take it and forget that criticism is a skill as writing is. And many of them with this ego problem can't separate their personal tastes from an objective measure of quality. if they don't care for this particular trope its a Bad Trope that should always be avoided.

They also often tend to believe in "if you put it on the internet, expect criticism" which they seem to take as "if I had to see it, I get to complain to the author about it"

I get having a beta being a requirement for fests and other things where you are writing for someone else. But otherwise, I agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh, I'm sorry you had to take that load of crock. Egos and sycophants are the worst combination.

There's a difference between "writers should be open to listening to concrit" and "writers who get concrit should immediately change their fic to accommodate it."

The first is usually what people mean when they say "writers should accept concrit." I don't know where these people got the second into their heads, and it sucks that they did, because that's some creepy power-tripping. Sorry you had to go through that, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Just another one of those cases where "concrit" means "rewrite your story to what I say it should be." >:(

mte. It's SO RARE for me to go back and edit something that I posted as "complete", and usually I won't go back unless it's like a typo or an egregious mistake (I once wrote "torpedo" when I meant "missile", for example).
It's fine to accept the crit but not want to revisit the story! (it's also fine not to accept crit. Being open to criticism doesn't mean you'll automatically AGREE with all criticism, also - it means that you'll listen with an open mind and consider it).

These people are crazy.

^^ Exactly this.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-29 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That's disgusting! >:O

I hope it didn't stop you from writing, at least!!

Did this happen on dreamwidth? Is the community in your secret still operating?

ngl, I'd be so tempted to 'rewrite' the fic in exactly the way the mods hated and even MORE so, then post it to watch their heads explode.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
God, even if you were excepting concrit, why does that mean "rewrite your fic right now!"? I think of concrit for fanfic as "I will take that into consideration in future writing", unless otherwise stated.

same

I've been told to take down my fic once for talking about in this very comm. some people who read fanfic are just really entitled.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly. Even if it's as easy as changing a comma or homonym, sometimes I prefer to let the story stand so I can think back on it and remember to try and do better in the future. That is, if I even accept the concrit as being correct.

I'll accept most concrit with a smile and a thank you, say I will work harder in the future, and let them know I'm done writing this particular fic (unless I don't want to be done with it), and no one has ever pushed further.

In other words, that sucks, OP. Glad you left that awful community.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.
I got concrit once that was pointing out I sometimes messed up my commas vs. periods when ending dialogue. That was fine, I paid more attention in the future, but I wasn't about to go back and edit previously posted stuff.

Man, I'm kinda curious what it was they pushed you to change. What bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I would have deleted the fic right then and there and never returned to that comm. What the fuck. Fuck them.

I kinda wanna guess at the fandom. A similar thing happened to a dear friend of mine too. They posted a really great fic but didn't reference a popular fanon thing in the way that the rest of the comm felt they should, and they got dogpiled in the comments. The real kicker is that they were so gatekeeper-y about it, instead of saying 'hey, welcome to the fandom newbie, nice writing,we're glad to have a new writer join in. Btw, that one minor detail, the fandom tends to approach this way and since you did it this other way, it could confuse readers.'

So, my friend dropped that comm like a hot potato.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks. I'm surprised you actually rewrote the fic rather than simply deleting it, though.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-30 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
You DO NOT have to change your fic to agree with anyone's critic. You should have just thanked them for their opinion and said you will remember it next time.

Or pulled the story and posted it elsewhere.
