LOL, "Get off my lawn!"

Most of my ire is directed to the brilliant dumbfucks who created the current generation of social media without addressing harassment and moderation. All of them are over 30, and some are my generational peers.

You blame the creators of social media platforms instead of the people doing the harassing?

It's not an either/or question, is it? But yes, I do blame social network architects who created systems where trolls get positive reinforcement for being trolly in the form of likes and reblogs. That's the systemic problem that they've let fester because drama gets them both media coverage and clicks.

On an interpersonal level, I think trolls should be whacked with a liberal banhammer. But that points back to the systemic problem that no one's really doing that in a consistent manner.

DA

Yep. Twitter technically should have banned Trump a while ago. It's totally valid to say Twitter is enabling him

That's part of the problem. They made spaces that are very difficult to moderate at all, and that's where a lot of the problems stem from imo. While it's true you can have shitty moderators that ruin stuff, I still think that moderated comms make for a much more stable experience.

I agree, the mantra has been "tagging is a better ontology than categories, folders, or communities." That's entirely my generation's fault. You end up putting people who hate MLP with people who love MLP. It's great for libraries where you want random access, but terrible for building communities.

Of course, there I go with "my generation's fault." Generally I have the opinion that intergenerational wank is a media distraction from real problems of class, race/ethnicity, and gender.

See, I think that tagging is great - but the groundwork should still be the stark difference between moderated communities and personal blogs. I think it makes for a much clearer fandom experience, a more organized one overall, and that way you can curate the community spaces in a positive way.

Generally I have the opinion that intergenerational wank is a media distraction from real problems of class, race/ethnicity, and gender.

I kinda agree. I think a lot of things nowadays are distractions to keep people from really doing what needs to be done. Look at all the "awareness raising" that goes on...

Oh hell yes, I do. It's the tools that are massively responsible for shaping communities and behaviors, for sure. So much can change due to decisions in the way the tools modify flow, traffic, and interactions.

I mean, for a tiny example, think about whether the responsibility is for users to individually block people who are offensive, or if enough people block individual commenters enough times so that they are automatically blocked as trolls.
