Re: What are you losing your mind over?

Not exactly losing my mind but, I keep seeing music articles that praise Taylor Swift and act like she's especially clever or self aware for mentioning critiques that she gets in her songs or addressing people's opinions of her and like... not really?

I mean she's aware of what people are saying but that's not the same as being self aware. I mean honestly it's the same old victim tune as in Mean when she wrote a whole diss song about a music critic who critiqued her.

It's nothing new honestly. She never seems to learn from anything said about her , she always just makes a new song about her being an attacked or wronged victim seeking righteous revenge. And putting so much focus on "striking back at the haters" just comes off really immature.

There isn't as much pressure to learn and grow as a person if you start off reasonably well off and get rich and famous young. Her new single feels like a cringetastic case of arrested development to me.

The impression I get from her, especially from LWYMMD, is that she's very self aware. She knows what people say about her and she knows the things about her that cause them to view her in such ways. And LWYMMD is her laughing at the entire ridiculous situation. Laughing at her haters and detractors. Laughing at the press. But also laughing at herself.

As far as I'm concerned, LWYMMD is a far inferior song to Blank Space. But one thing I will say for it is that the commentary it's giving out is a lot more complex than the commentary of Blank Space. Blank Space was basically Taylor going, "The person the press likes to depict me as is NOTHING like who I actually am, but she is a deliciously insane character." Whereas LWYMMD is far more complex. On the one hand, it's clearly mocking the petty, vengeful, borderline-sociopathic character the press paints her as...but on the other hand, there's an element of her owning some of it as well. There's an element of her going, "I'm none of these hilariously simplistic caricatures, but you know what? Reputation be damned, I'm a little bit of ALL of them."

What I like about LWYMMD is that it encapsulates the messy reality of others criticism, which is that it's rarely accurate, but there's often still some truth in it. One doesn't have to be a psychotic villainess to understand what anger and a desire for retaliation feels like.

AYRT

really?

I mean I thought it was pretty clearly referring to Kanye and Katy who she had feuds with.

Well yeah, that's the part where she's like, "Lol, you know what? I AM kinda mad." That's the "tilted stage/ play the fool/ said the gun was mine/ I don't like you" parts. That's her going, "I never actually properly did a dis track. I remained vague and tactful while everyone else couldn't stop naming and blaming me. And now all our dirty laundry is out there anyway. So you know what, fuck it, let's do a real dis track."

Then the "I never move on EVER, I'm your NIGHTMARE, I'm a Machiavellian snake and you're ALL gonna PAY" parts are just straight up commentary/satire, and I find that really clear. Like, it's not a coincidence that the woman who hit off her last album with "I'm just gonna shake it off" has gone to literally the polar opposite end of the spectrum with "The world moves on[...]/ but not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma." And from "I got this music in my mind sayin' it's gonna be alright" to "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me." It seems clear that the first of each is sincere, the second of each is commentary/satire. Nobody says "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me" and means it seriously. Nobody admits to that. Unless they're like, in the mob or something, and I mean, come on.

And then the parts in the video where she's clambering over herself in panic and terror and it's all very undignified and desperate, plus all of her selves mocking each other and calling each other out. To me, that brings it all together. All the Taylors on one level, fighting among themselves, trying to reconcile with each other. Which is both poking fun at the media and also acknowledging something about herself, I think.

This is an extremely generous interpretation. I'm not sure if I believe it, but I applaud your kindness.

*shrugs* Maybe. I'm just describing it how I see it.

100% agreed.

It's like when the school bully gets everyone to laugh back at you over something you (may have rightly) said about the bully. It's almost like, making ridiculous joke = maybe everyone will believe it's actually not true! I guess if you can't believe it yourself, there's no reason to grow or change.

In order for this analogy to work, Taylor Swift has to be the bully in this situation. As opposed to the one doing her best to defend herself from bullies. Your perspective may vary, clearly.

I'm of the opinion she isn't as innocent as she makes herself out to be. Of course, it is possible she's just one of those folks who never learns from her situations. Or even a bit of both.
