Re: What are you losing your mind over?
(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 03:07 am (UTC)(link)As far as I'm concerned, LWYMMD is a far inferior song to Blank Space. But one thing I will say for it is that the commentary it's giving out is a lot more complex than the commentary of Blank Space. Blank Space was basically Taylor going, "The person the press likes to depict me as is NOTHING like who I actually am, but she is a deliciously insane character." Whereas LWYMMD is far more complex. On the one hand, it's clearly mocking the petty, vengeful, borderline-sociopathic character the press paints her as...but on the other hand, there's an element of her owning some of it as well. There's an element of her going, "I'm none of these hilariously simplistic caricatures, but you know what? Reputation be damned, I'm a little bit of ALL of them."
What I like about LWYMMD is that it encapsulates the messy reality of others criticism, which is that it's rarely accurate, but there's often still some truth in it. One doesn't have to be a psychotic villainess to understand what anger and a desire for retaliation feels like.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 03:46 am (UTC)(link)I mean I thought it was pretty clearly referring to Kanye and Katy who she had feuds with.
Re: AYRT
(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 06:22 am (UTC)(link)Then the "I never move on EVER, I'm your NIGHTMARE, I'm a Machiavellian snake and you're ALL gonna PAY" parts are just straight up commentary/satire, and I find that really clear. Like, it's not a coincidence that the woman who hit off her last album with "I'm just gonna shake it off" has gone to literally the polar opposite end of the spectrum with "The world moves on[...]/ but not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma." And from "I got this music in my mind sayin' it's gonna be alright" to "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me." It seems clear that the first of each is sincere, the second of each is commentary/satire. Nobody says "I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me" and means it seriously. Nobody admits to that. Unless they're like, in the mob or something, and I mean, come on.
And then the parts in the video where she's clambering over herself in panic and terror and it's all very undignified and desperate, plus all of her selves mocking each other and calling each other out. To me, that brings it all together. All the Taylors on one level, fighting among themselves, trying to reconcile with each other. Which is both poking fun at the media and also acknowledging something about herself, I think.
