It's plausible but I don't know howixh that really came across on the show

Ultimately she's the last one still standing. She deliberately set up that other member of the hand against Alexandra, and he'd have killed her too, if Elektra had not intervened. She gets what she wants in the end. I'd call that successful.

I agree. She only acted subservient in front of Alexandra. But there're two things in the show that make me believe she was only playing at being a "lackey" (up to a point because I also think that they're was a strange form of loyalty/kinship between the fingers of the hand).

Firstly, Alexandra herself reminded her that there was a time when the other fingers plotted against herself.

And lastly, just after a scene with Alexandra where she assured her of her support, she told Murakami "You were right". Leading me to believe they were talking about Alexandra behind her back.

I believe she was ready to follow Alexandra up to a point but when she saw that she was acting too rashly, letting one of them, Sowande, get killed, and compromising their chance of going back home, she was ready to stand her ground.

I wish they had dedicated more time to her, the other fingers, and their dynamics. The idea that they just wanted to go home was compelling. Also, Gao had powers and Sowande was implied to have some too (stopping hearts). It would have been nice to see more of that as well as what powers the others (including Alexandra) could have had.

But Alexandra is dead and Mme Gao live so we can hope for a lot of great things from her next time.

I love the Defenders but it's that kind of stuff that convince me it would have benefite from a few more episodes.
