My mother has lost her keys. She has now decided that she left them on the roof of the car, and that since I didn't look at the roof before I drove out the next day, I'm partially to blame, even though I had no reason to look. Now I have to retrace my steps all the way to where I finally went as if it would have stayed on the roof that long.

I'm sure you realize this already, but your mom is being unreasonable and trying to shift blame and responsibility to you when it's her own fault for being careless. She ought to be embarrassed.

Yeah. I am definitely the type of mom who would leave her keys on the roof the car, but not the type to blame it on anybody else. There's virtually no way to retrace your steps in a car and find a small object like this.

It's tempting to be a smartass and ask her if there's anything else you should watch out for in order to protect her from her own screw ups. Because that's basically what she's expecting you to do.
