I think any really popular fandom will have the worst AUs as people who write ATG migrate. That isn't to say it can't have good ones but it's not a thing rare fandoms generally have to deal with.

I think fandoms that have a high degree of canon divergent AUs are generally the better ones but it depends on who is writing for the fandom and how well they can capture characteristics.

I love AUs. I don't care for the coffee shop/high school type. But I love ones that are creative - like well-thought out Superhero AUs that give powers to characters that fit the characters. Or canon divergent AUs that really dig into canon.
