AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandom do you think has the best AUs?

Which has the worst?

Do you like AUs? Do you hate them? Are you in a fandom you wish had more of them or fewer of them?

What's your favorite AU you've ever read?

Re: AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of AUs, but they rarely work out well. Either the AU setting itself is old hat, (e.g. coffee shop, high school) or it's so poorly done that it seems pointless to call it AU because no effort has been put into the new setting. Or it's so OOC that it might as well be original fiction because it bears so little resemblance to the characters.

Yeah, these are the exact reasons why I tend to not like AU's. :/ I usually find that fics fall in the third category.

I hate that AO3 makes it so damn difficult to filter them out. Same with crossovers. I'm happy for anyone to write whatever they want, I just wish I could entirely skip modern AUs of GoT and ASOIAF fics when I want to.

-modern will get rid of most of them.

You literally took the words out of my mouth, or fingertips, or whatever. Unfortunately filtering by "-modern" will not filter them all out because a lot of people don't tag their modern AUs, because they are heinous bastard people who deserve a special place in fandom hell.

I think the MCU and SPN has the best just because of the volume of fic. There is something for everyone.

Shadowhunters has the worst. But I think they have pretty bad fic in general because it is so...repetitive.

I love AUs. I sort of wish there were more sugar daddy AUs but that is a kink of mine. >.>

I am going to share a fic that I just finished and mentioned on anon because I was on mobile.

Founding Fathers. It a Walking Dead fic where Daryl is 12 instead of an adult. And it covers the whole series. It was way more emotionally fulfilling than the show ever was (for me). https://archiveofourown.org/works/7541509/chapters/17147491

I also like the one. Water Can't Drown Me. https://archiveofourown.org/series/189098 A great series of fics.

I love AUs, too, and i've found some really amazing ones over the years. I agree with your assessment of MCU and SPN having the best AUs.

Thanks for the links! They look awesome.

If you have even a bit of interest in TWD that fic is with reading. Or, if you are like me and ended up having the show before you stopped watching, you will love it.

I liked TWD for a little while - a couple/three seasons - but it's just such a huge mess anymore, i just quit. I loved Daryl and Carol the best, though, so i look forward to it, different as it might be. :)

If you love Daryl, that is the fanfic for you. It has ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!

Whoooooooo!!

Re: AUs

I think any really popular fandom will have the worst AUs as people who write ATG migrate. That isn't to say it can't have good ones but it's not a thing rare fandoms generally have to deal with.

I think fandoms that have a high degree of canon divergent AUs are generally the better ones but it depends on who is writing for the fandom and how well they can capture characteristics.

I love AUs. I don't care for the coffee shop/high school type. But I love ones that are creative - like well-thought out Superhero AUs that give powers to characters that fit the characters. Or canon divergent AUs that really dig into canon.

I like AUs a lot, but a lot of my favorite AUs, I like more because they're good *stories* than because of the specifically AU elements. Like, for instance, I think my favorite AU is a genderswapped Les Mis f/f fic that's set in contemporary Montreal and is all about the aftermath of the student riots there. But the AU element doesn't exactly provide a huge new window on the original fiction. It's just a really good, really affecting romance story.

I still want to see more though, especially rare AUs.

I don't know about best or worst, or any of that. I think most of my more recent fics are AUs of the "this character did not actually die like they did in canon" variety.

I love AUs that require world-building. Like 'in space' or 'post apocalypse' or things like that. Those are so fucking fun.

I also love a good 'no powers/no demons/no whatever' type of AU in 'verses where those exist. I think i like the 'find each other during a hard time/emergency and fall for each other' type of AUs best - i like there to be some action or danger.

I really don't like high school AUs much at all, they seem to be very cliche and a bit pointless. I very very very much dislike 'had a kid!' AUs where the kids are horribly precocious and precious and/or are actually supposed to be other characters just deaged. Yick.

I've always loved Merlin's AUs.

Idk about worst, but I know I've seen summaries that made me go ??? and One Direction is definitely one of those fandoms, for me. I love looking into all the weird AUs 1D fandom writes. They fascinate me.

I love AUs. Any fandoms I wish had more of them are fandoms that are smaller to begin with so that there's little fic to begin with, let alone AUs.

I really loved one Scrubs ABC's The Bachelorette fusion fic I read wherein JD was a contestant on The Bachelorette. It made me giddy.

I'm not very big on AU's, typically I want to read about the characters in their own specific circumstances and removing them from that makes me loose most of my interest. Especially if there's a magical or fantastical element to the story, removing that to shove the characters into a completely mundane setting holds no appeal for me.

I can enjoy canon divergence AU's to a degree though, like swapping around the roles of a few characters to see how things might be different. But that's about it tbh.

I like AUs from 'real world' shows that introduce a magical element. Sherlock had a lot of this sort of thing, from magical realism fics to supernatural creature AUs.

Re: AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Sherlock fandom has great AUs, but I think any sufficiently large fandom will have plenty of good ones due to sheer volume.

Re: AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this! Sherlock AUs are honestly pretty awesome, and extremely varied. And as you say, a big part of that is due to the overall size of the fandom. But I also think a big part of it is because Sherlock is just really adaptable to taking on other settings and contexts. I mean, you can make Sherlock a vampire or a rock star or a mysterious nineteenth century shut-in, or just about anything else you can dream up, and none of that necessitates changing his core defining traits: He's an acerbic, misanthropic genius with an interest in all things scientific and criminal. And John is unassuming, competent, deceptively bamfy, and has dualistic drives towards both defensive violence and healing - all of which can be kept, regardless of what universe he is transplanted into.

They're not like The Avengers, where you often have to strip them of their powers in order to drop them into an AU. Or like the SPN team, who you have to strip of their defining purpose.

By which I don't mean to imply I think Sherlock is superior, just that it's better suited to AUs than the vast majority of fandoms out there.

Re: AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sherlock himself just translates SO WELL into being made into different sorts of supernatural creatures. It's not hard to see him as a vampire AT ALL.

Re: AUs

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a very good point. Sherlock, Elementary, and other adaptions have proven that you don't need the Victorian - or even British - setting to create something interesting that retains the essence of the ACD characters. AU fanfics with magic or vampires or aliens likewise can be interesting while retaining the essence of the BBC Sherlock characters, rather than just becoming a story about a bunch of people with the same names doing different things.
