This is a very good point. Sherlock, Elementary, and other adaptions have proven that you don't need the Victorian - or even British - setting to create something interesting that retains the essence of the ACD characters. AU fanfics with magic or vampires or aliens likewise can be interesting while retaining the essence of the BBC Sherlock characters, rather than just becoming a story about a bunch of people with the same names doing different things.
