Seconding this! Sherlock AUs are honestly pretty awesome, and extremely varied. And as you say, a big part of that is due to the overall size of the fandom. But I also think a big part of it is because Sherlock is just really adaptable to taking on other settings and contexts. I mean, you can make Sherlock a vampire or a rock star or a mysterious nineteenth century shut-in, or just about anything else you can dream up, and none of that necessitates changing his core defining traits: He's an acerbic, misanthropic genius with an interest in all things scientific and criminal. And John is unassuming, competent, deceptively bamfy, and has dualistic drives towards both defensive violence and healing - all of which can be kept, regardless of what universe he is transplanted into.

They're not like The Avengers, where you often have to strip them of their powers in order to drop them into an AU. Or like the SPN team, who you have to strip of their defining purpose.

By which I don't mean to imply I think Sherlock is superior, just that it's better suited to AUs than the vast majority of fandoms out there.

Sherlock himself just translates SO WELL into being made into different sorts of supernatural creatures. It's not hard to see him as a vampire AT ALL.

This is a very good point. Sherlock, Elementary, and other adaptions have proven that you don't need the Victorian - or even British - setting to create something interesting that retains the essence of the ACD characters. AU fanfics with magic or vampires or aliens likewise can be interesting while retaining the essence of the BBC Sherlock characters, rather than just becoming a story about a bunch of people with the same names doing different things.
