What stupid fandom stuff have you seen lately?
(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)It totally had nothing to do with the fact ASM did horribly at the box office. Or that Disney made a deal with Sony and they rebooted Spiderman to fit into the MCU. No...totally because Andrew Garfield mentioned it would be cool is Spiderman was bi.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)The girl version of Lord of the Flies
(Anonymous) 2017-09-03 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)GIRLS WOULD NOT DESCEND INTO MADNESS LIKE BOYS!
But...GIRLS ARE JUST AS CAPABLE OF BEING CRUEL AS BOYS!!!
Re: What stupid fandom stuff have you seen lately?
Not only did ASM2 do horribly at the box office, but did OP even see the film? It was so crowded with storylines as is, no shit they cut all the stuff they'd filmed with Mary Jane.
I also think OP is reaching about Michael B. Jordan being open to it because that's not what his quote that OP included implies to me at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 01:06 am (UTC)(link)I agree with you though. I'm definitely over the discourse about female characters inherently being better and smarter and perfect and flawless just by virtue of being female. It's so boring.
Re: What stupid fandom stuff have you seen lately?
(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 01:45 am (UTC)(link)I want more women in fiction too, but I hate when people think it makes you sexist if you don't love every shallow female character who meanders into the plot. Sexism plays a role in the lack of popularity of female characters, but the sexism is usually more on the creators' part than on the fans'. It's absurd to blame fans for not caring about female characters when, by and large, creators are sexist and produce female characters so poorly written that it's offensive.
Which makes it even more frustrating when the few actually well-written female characters are, as you said, reduced to being uwu badass queens. The people who profess to care the most about female characters are doing them a disservice.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)I will say, while I am sure ASM was not continued because of low box office numbers, the fact Sony specified Spider-Man needed to be white and explicitly heterosexual in the Marvel contract does seem to be in response to the Andrew Garfield push. Because otherwise who would look at Marvel's sea of white heterosexual Chrisses and go ".... Yeah, odds are really good they're gonna make Peter Parker a black lesbian. Better head that off right now."
