What stupid fandom stuff have you seen lately?

Today I saw someone say that Amazing Spiderman was not continued because Sony are homophobes. https://beachdeath.tumblr.com/post/164938175208/beachdeath-re-last-gifset-i-mean-yes-and-good

It totally had nothing to do with the fact ASM did horribly at the box office. Or that Disney made a deal with Sony and they rebooted Spiderman to fit into the MCU. No...totally because Andrew Garfield mentioned it would be cool is Spiderman was bi.

I'm outraged OP. I'm furious. Ban Tumblr.

The girl version of Lord of the Flies

has been pretty fun to watch. People don't know what to be mad about.

GIRLS WOULD NOT DESCEND INTO MADNESS LIKE BOYS!

But...GIRLS ARE JUST AS CAPABLE OF BEING CRUEL AS BOYS!!!

It was just on my dash, and while OP makes interesting points, I feel like they're really ignoring a lot of reality.

Not only did ASM2 do horribly at the box office, but did OP even see the film? It was so crowded with storylines as is, no shit they cut all the stuff they'd filmed with Mary Jane.

I also think OP is reaching about Michael B. Jordan being open to it because that's not what his quote that OP included implies to me at all.

Using the word fujoshi in any way shape or form when you're not Japanese is cultural appropriation.

I was confused by your post because I was half paying attention and thought you were speaking seriously. But lol.

Someone one Tumblr complaining that a mostly-male series would have been so much more interesting and full of possibilities if there had been badass women put into it. Because apparently the sole presence of female characters suddenly awakens more possibilities than anything else. Honestly I'm just sick of the whole 'I'm going to talk about how female characters are automatically more amazing/badass/perfect than male characters in order to show how woke and progressive I am' trend on Tumblr (which also tends to lead towards tearing down female characters who dare to be problematic or reducing complex characters with strengths and weaknesses to 'uwu perfect badass queens').

What show?

I agree with you though. I'm definitely over the discourse about female characters inherently being better and smarter and perfect and flawless just by virtue of being female. It's so boring.

The most likely result of adding ~badass women~ to a mostly-male canon is that the women would just exist to be a suitable prize for the men. And the male characters' once-interesting character arcs would be consumed by cliched het romance. Wow, so many interesting possibilities!

I want more women in fiction too, but I hate when people think it makes you sexist if you don't love every shallow female character who meanders into the plot. Sexism plays a role in the lack of popularity of female characters, but the sexism is usually more on the creators' part than on the fans'. It's absurd to blame fans for not caring about female characters when, by and large, creators are sexist and produce female characters so poorly written that it's offensive.

Which makes it even more frustrating when the few actually well-written female characters are, as you said, reduced to being uwu badass queens. The people who profess to care the most about female characters are doing them a disservice.

More of the same ol' "If you're a woman older than 20 in fandom you're creepy and predatory" garbage.

I will say, while I am sure ASM was not continued because of low box office numbers, the fact Sony specified Spider-Man needed to be white and explicitly heterosexual in the Marvel contract does seem to be in response to the Andrew Garfield push. Because otherwise who would look at Marvel's sea of white heterosexual Chrisses and go ".... Yeah, odds are really good they're gonna make Peter Parker a black lesbian. Better head that off right now."
