Gerrymandering. Commercials for medical drugs. For profit colleges and prisons. Tipping.

I wouldn't say tipping should be illegal, servers should just be paid an actual living wage

Yeah, that is why I want tipping to be illegal. If there was no tipping, there would be no loophole to prevent people from paying servers a normal wage.

That's fair. I guess my concern is that if you just outlaw tipping, restaurants will still find ways to underpay and exploit their workers.

They can try but if it was easy, all other businesses would be doing the same thing.

I actually do think that, in general, workers in the United States are paid a lot less than they deserve and than they ought to get. What with massive increases in real productivity without corresponding increases in real wages.

But that probably doesn't help with the restaurant worker thing specifically.

Good ones. Absolutely.

I don't think tipping should be illegal, but it should not be normalized. Restaurants, etc. should pay their staff a living wage, and a tip should be a above-and-beyond thank-you for service that went crazy out of its way to be good.

Agreed with all of these with the caveat that, of course, we switch to a no-tip culture and pay our servers (which appears to be what you meant). :)

Private prisons.
Requiring addresses on job applications.

Definitely private prisons. Outsourcing is usually nasty, but private prisons are usually horrifying. I don't know if I agree on the address thing. I guess I do, except once the applicant actually gets a job, I think they should provide their address, unless they don't have one, in which case they still need to provide a valid phone number and email address. I think using no address=no job as a way to discriminate against homeless people is despicable, but I also think employers should have their employees' addresses when they've got them.

Isn't the address thing because it's needed for tax purposes?

Re: What is something legal that should be illegal?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-04 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt but yeah, I work in an area that is at the intersection of a few separate states, and they need my address at very least to verify which state taxes should be taken out of my paycheck. As far as I know, that's absolutely necessary.

On a job application though? Maybe not.
