Takeshi Obata vs. Clamp, for one example of the breadth of dynamic vs. sameface manga style.

tbh it's almost better to think of generic anime characters as statues/stock images and see how the artist applies other parts of art fundamentals to it, like if they've got good line weight, gesture, colors, and so on to understand what's appealing about. looking at the figure superfically is the easiest way to overlook what's actually good about anime art.

though i've never really gotten the anime looks the same complaint, it's pretty easy for me to tell part artists

Same here. I can identify different studios by their style and technique, even if I've never seen an episode of the show and know nothing about the plot. Maybe it's because I'm an artist and part of my enjoyment of good anime is picking up on little details like how the hair is rendered and how body shapes are stylized.

I mean, it's all cartoons, and they pretty much follow similar conventions. There are significant differences - I wouldn't say Cowboy Bebop is the same style as Hamtaro. But maybe not as significant as like, idk, Family Guy and Batman the Animated Series. lol

Where as American cartoons are unique snowflakes. https://ii.yuki.la/0/96/1cead2e2de15f59dd22866a506b7d791d2929064998826ba851272fd8fda2960.gif

It's probably one of those things when you get used to if you see it enough. To me Kazuya Minekura ( https://s1.zerochan.net/Kazuya.Minekura.600.601197.jpg ) has an entirely different style than Naoko Takeuchi ( https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e3/c1/03/e3c103afb706e8528e63bf07c3cd0177.jpg )

"Where as American cartoons are unique snowflakes."

This sounds a wee bit defensive, considering the secret says absolutely nothing about American cartoons at all and certainly doesn't say they're superior.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-10 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's implied because otherwise why not include cartoons/comics in there? They specifically went after manga and anime, which is a ridiculously common opinion. People get used to looking at American styles and can instantly tell Family Guy from Simpsons from Bob's Burgers even though they're all bug eyed noodle people.

I don't see how? Bleach looks nothing like Claymore looks nothing like One Piece looks nothing like Naruto, despite the fact they're all shonen titles that were popular at the same time. Each of them may have some repetitive design within their own continuity, but stylistically you could never mistake one of those titles for each another.

You clearly haven't read any manga with great, unique art then like Oyasumi Punpun, Otoyomegatari, Berserk, or, hell, even Prison School.

Fuck Otoyomegatari is beautiful. It's like, every other page is something I'd want on my wall.

Oh gosh, seconding Otoyomegatari.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
well, duh. if you haven't been exposed to a lot of something you tend not to notice details and instead focus on the broader markers

You must be blind, because this: http://wwwcdn.impact-books.com/wp-content/uploads/2-20-21.jpg

doesn't look a thing like this: https://www.geek.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/death-note.jpg
