I take it you've never seen fandoms of "minor unremarkable characters" before.

I'm old enough to remember Matt from Death Note.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
omg

I can NOT get over Matt's popularity. he has like six manga panels and that's it, does NOTHING remarkable except die, and manages to be like the fourth most popular Death Note character.

I remember his superfans would try to make him his own personal Wikipedia page. (not like the Death Note fan-wiki, like the real Wikipedia) lmao

He was interesting in the blank slate fill-in-your-AU way but as a character there was nothing to him. And yet...

To be fair, I did appreciate that about Death Note - it had a lot of opportunity to "fill in the gaps" yourself, and I think that's why the fandom got so big. I can see how maybe DN might have successfully implied a bigger story behind Matt and Mello, especially if you're looking for Mello characterization fodder. But Matt didn't actually have any significance beyond what a fan already interested in Mello (probably mostly those interesting in shipping Mello with someone) would project.

Yeah, I would've totally understood if it were all Matt/Mello fandom and people were a fan of Matt as a part of the ship. But there were definitely Matt fans who were fans of the character standalone, tons of fanart, everything. Out of six panels. After that I have no doubt the YOI girls' fandom is real.

Were you around the DN fandom before the anime came out, or rather, as it was coming out? There were Matt fangirls from the manga alone, and I remember them being SO OUTRAGED when Matt had even less dialogue in the anime, and the biggest drama was that he was colored completely differently than the fans had been coloring him. I think his hair color and shirt color were different than how fanartists had been portraying him. There was war, I tell you, war.

Yes I was.

Tbh I miss those times in a way...

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I loved the DN fandom. It could be because I was in high school, but I don't think I've had so much fun in an online fandom since.

"I'm old enough to remember Matt from Death Note."

What do you mean, it came out like last...

JUST

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, last month or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, I just went and looked it up too. It's old enough to be in high school...

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
idk right.

I just watched the horrible Netflix movie when it came out a week or two ago, and like five minutes later I got a Fanfiction.net notification for a pretty popular fanfic I had never finished writing. And the comment was something like "I know you haven't updated this for ten years, but..."

what is life, seriously

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
u r old

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
A coworker asked me how the Netflix adaptation was different from the original Death Note anime and, as I was explaining the differences between Light Turner and Light Yagami, I had an "OMG I'm old!" moment because I first watched the anime when I was in high school.

Death Note was the biggest fandom represented in the secrets when I joined F!S. That was ten years ago.
