If anyone did recommend YOI on the strength of it's female characters, they would indeed be misleading you. But outside Yuuri, Victor & Yuri P., all the other characters are pretty minor. I'm not sure why you'd doubt the sincerity of Mila and Sara's fans and not idk, Chris' or Phicit's fans...

Possibly the supporting skaters' character development feels a bit deeper to their fans because of the internal monologue skate sequences? I'm a much bigger fan of the ladies myself, but it's noticable that none of them are given any emotional insight (except arguably Sara, who has to share it with her brother).

Yeah, this. There's Yuri, Victor, and Yuri Jr. Then there's a cast of side characters.

I mean, sure, the male side characters at least get performance time, but I would say Sala or Yuko maybe gets a little more character than some of the forgettable male skaters, like the bitchy Korean one or the boring American one or the girly looking Chinese one.

Phichit is by far the most developed character who isn't one of the main three. He's not comparable to Chris or either of those two girls.

I can NOT get over Matt's popularity. he has like six manga panels and that's it, does NOTHING remarkable except die, and manages to be like the fourth most popular Death Note character.

I remember his superfans would try to make him his own personal Wikipedia page. (not like the Death Note fan-wiki, like the real Wikipedia) lmao

While I'm not going to pretend I have no idea where you're coming from, with the idea that people super love a show so want it to encompass everything they value therefore inflate the significance of female characters... I did think the female characters were pretty cute and likable for being side characters. Sala (Sara?) and the Russian girl were amusing and Yuko was a cutie. And the ballet teacher was pretty entertaining in a drunk-aunt kind of way. They were all super side characters but oh well, I found them entertaining enough.

Going by my dash, they're a pretty notable pairing in the fandom. But I can't remember them even interacting on the show. If anything, the token lesbians should've been Yuri K's ballet coach and his sister...

The ballet coach is too horny for the male skaters, but I'd have rooted for the sister to be a lesbian, but she kind of went male-skater horny at the end, too.

It's blink and you miss it. They sit and hang out together at competitions, and during the infamous Yuuri Katsuki's Wild Evening slideshow they're also standing quite close to each other and taking pictures. Fandom has shipped characters for less.

They're fairly heavily promoted in side material. They went on a trip together just the two of them recently in an official skit and they were sunbathing topless together in the official calendar.

It's not something fandom made up. It's the most heavily promoted official pairing for the two of them.

Sara's a good minor character, and so are other female characters that nobody talks about because they're not available for femslashing (Yuuko, Minako, Mari, Hiroko, Lilia) but I don't understand the Mila love. I mean, I do but I don't. The fandom was talking about wanting her to skate on their faces as soon as she was shown in a background shot. Before she had any lines and before she was even a confirmed character. So it's pretty obvious why people like her. She really is a female version of Matt from Death Note.

On one hand I get your point, but on the other they both have more characterization than Otabek, and he's quite popular.

So who knows, maybe some people actually do like them (and more sincerely than all those Otabek fans who just use him as an OC receptacle of their headcanons to ship him with Yurio).

Ha ha ha. Sara might have as much characterization as Otabek, but Mila's not even close. Most people who write Otayuri rely heavily on the manga that came limited with the last DVD and get a lot of Otabek's characterization from there. Even if you don't care about that and go by the "It's not canon if it's not in the show" philosophy, we aren't just inventing characterization for him as an OC. Kubo Mitsurou provided it. She didn't give us anything extra for Mila or Sara.

You realize they're paired together a ton in official side material yes? More so than either of them with any other character?

SaraMila is the unofficial ship of the both of them promoted in several pieces of media, all official: they hung out at last year's banquet, they went on a trip together just the two of them (confirmed at the Yuri on Festival event) and they were sunbathing together in the 2017 calendar.

They're as good friends or even better than Otabek and Yurio and hang out a lot. Why aren't we allowed to ship them?
