repeatedly expressed disgust and outrage at the idea of people liking ships that rivaled theirs.

They eventually turned out to have this attitude toward political opinions as well (and was annoyingly conservative) so I dodged a bullet.

Sometimes people's attitudes with small things can hint at their attitude toward bigger things.
