Has a secret ever made you squirm in discomfort

(Anonymous) 2017-09-14 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Has there ever been a secret that made you feel "called out" even if it wasn't about you? Why? and what's your side of the story?

I've seen a secret or two about a fallout with a friend that came so close to my reality that it made me squirm with uneasiness. It's very common (understandably) for people to take the OP's side since it's the side we're getting but it makes me wonder about the other side of the story sometimes.

Admit it OP, did you secretly have an affair with Chris Pratt

God, I wish!

Okay seriously though nope. I'm referring more to past secrets.

Pfff, thank you for this comment. It made me chuckle.

Shit, I'd totally have an affair with Chris Pratt.

Wasn't a secret, but there was a page 2 topic recently about 'things you really hate in your fandom' and there was a comment about a BNF who posts annotated author's notes.

I'm certainly not a BNF in my current fandom, but ever since that secret I'm been in knots worrying that it's about me. (I wrote a novel-length fanfiction a while ago that does indeed have pretty extensive author's notes for each chapter.)

I know what you mean those kind of things always get me super paranoid.

I've taken to not reading those kind of threads when it comes to fic because I know I'm going to find something discouraging. I've been pretty happy ever since I started doing that.

If it makes you feel better, nonny, I generally tend to like authors notes. The longer the better! Especially if it's something like giving a link to a painting mentioned in the story, or historical background, or even just links to meta discussions about a topic in the story?

I don't like review begging or random nonsense that has nothing to do with the story/fandom, though.

Yeah, I don't do that. The canon I wrote in is big and messy; I did some pick and choose and stitch and spackle, and mostly used author's notes primarily to explain what I did and why for certain plot elements.

I've recently been reading a fic where the AN are basically historical footnotes. At first I was like wtf is with the history lessons at the end of chapter, but I appreciated the research the author put in for their story, so i don't mind. I generally scroll past unless I was curious about something in particular. It certainly didn't detract from the story itself.

I'm suddenly wondering if I'm reading your fic....if I am, I really like it! And I appreciate the attention to detail (also the last chapter I read had me ways, I did not expect that twist!).

For vague reference, it's an anime/manga fandom...the pairing is not Canon. Am i reading your fic?

Nope, not mine -- I put all my notes at the end of the fic for easier ScrollPast.

But hey, it's good you're reading one you're enjoying!

A very long time ago there was a secret about people who offer to write fic to raise money for charity and don't actually write the fic in the end. And there were many comments, all agreeing how terrible that is.

So anyway I have done that twice. I don't really have a defense. I just screwed up. After I saw the secret I went back and apologized to the other people involved and they were totally OK with me. I didn't really think either one of them had posted the secret but I felt bad and I will totally admit I deserved to.

Honestly, I'd understand because shit happens, but ONLY if the person contacted me to let me know they couldn't do it. If they just ghost me, then that's really shitty. Good on you for letting them know what happened.

A thing like this happened to me twice - with a fic and an art, me being the one giving the money. I looked up their pages so I commision something we both like.
I hate the lack of closure in my situation. It's great that you apologised.

Someone posted a secret that I was 99% sure was about a fic of mine. If it was, the OP completely misrepresented the fic, and started a big wankstorm.

What fic was it and how did they misrepresent it?

Unless you're a BNF or you're sure someone you know is on FS, it probably wasn't you, anon. Lots of complaints people have about specific fics could easily apply to lots of fics and/or authors.

Not exactly, but there've been a few secrets over the years that related to me when I was at worse points in my life, if that makes sense?

Like as an example: "I'm overinvested in this character to the point where I act like them" is the secret, and it makes me think how glad I am that I'm not like that anymore?
