Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a very Proto-Urban Fantasy adaptation of a classic story where greed is punished by creatively horrific magical curses, and humility is rewarded with untold riches. Of course Wonka (who is a modernist fairy king or jinn) knows what he's doing. Of course the children are tortured. And of course, Charlie gets rewarded because he's the poorest and humblest child of the lot. That doesn't matter much because it's a moralist fable and not at all realistic.
(Another mark of modernization: Charlie and the Chocolate factory is significantly less gruesome than earlier variations. After all, no one cuts off their toes to make the shoe fit, or is driven into the wilderness having been blinded by thorns.)
EDIT: My biggest problem with the Burton version: Fairy kings and jinn don't have father issues.
