I hated the whole Wonka had daddy issues thing. especially since the point of that was apparently "even if your parents do stuff that sucks they have your best interests at heart" bullshit. I hope no kids who have abusive parents ever saw that.

I think both film versions leaned a bit too much toward making Wonka a protagonist rather than the antagonist. Burton in particular seems to have more sympathy for dysfunctional adult man-children than for actual children.
