Re: complaints

I have been trying to get help from Vocational Rehabilitation (VRC) since October of 2016. I live in the United States and the county of the state I live in (H) doesn't have a VRC. I have to go to the VRC in the neighboring county (C). I told my VRC Caseworker about the county residency and how I have had problems in the past with not getting help because of where I live. She said she understood and would help me find a job coach.

In March my VRC Caseworker finally got around to assigning me a job coach. When I talked to him, he said that he couldn't help me because I live in H and they only help residents of C. I told my VRC Caseworker and she said she would find someone who works with residents of H.

She called me in late July to say she found someone to be my job coach and I needed to come to the office to meet with him. I don't drive due to physical problems that make it unsafe for me to drive. I had to get a family member to drop me off at a bus stop to get there. Bus service does not cross county lines here.

I get to the office and wait. My appointment was at 9 and they don't call me to go to the back for a little over two hours. The man said he owns a job coach service with his wife and would call me in a few days to schedule a time for me to meet with my assigned job coach. We talked about services I needed (transportation and personal references that aren't family because I don't talk to people or have friends). He said they would help me with my resume and I said I didn't need it. He said I must because I was at VRC. I pulled out my tablet, opened the Google doc with my resume, and showed it to him. I explained that I took and taught several classes on how to make a resume. I told him how I was the one who helped people with job searching at my last job as an assistant librarian.

He gave me a business card and said he'd call. He never did and when I tried the contact info on the card, the main phone line was the wrong number, the second number just rang for ages with no answer, the website was for sale, the email bounced back, and Googling the business name turned up nothing.

I tried calling my VRC Caseworker and she never answered, every time it went to voicemail. She never returned my calls. I keep my phone by me at all times- if it rings, I answer- no matter what the number is. I sent emails and she never responded.

I received a letter today from my VRC Caseworker saying she and my job coach have tried to call me and I never answer. That she has scheduled me for a meeting on September 29th at 8 AM to talk.

I can't get to that side of town that early with the bus. I can't afford to take a taxi or Lyft. Everyone I know that might be willing to drive me there can't.

I kinda found a job anyway doing contract work in chat support for various companies. I start once I finish my training and since I am contract, I can choose my own hours. It is online, but the call center I will work with is based in C county.

Jesus, now the word 'county' depresses me.

Dang.

Maybe try writing a snail mail letter to the case worker about what's been going on?

Is there a central number for the VRC rather than a direct line to your caseworker? You could call that and either see if they will put you through to your caseworker, or take a written message, or maybe there is someone else you could report all of this to and explain you have not been able to contact your caseworker despite many attempts.
